Default Powerglide transmission question!

Getting my buddies 63 coupe ready to sell. I know the powerglide has two gears, but my question is regarding the console! "D" is obviously for Drive, but are you supposed to be able to downshift to the letter L ? There is no ability to do that in his car , so I'm thinking the letter L is just there for looks!

Something must be wrong with you the shifter or the transmission linkage. You should be able to downshift that into low gear.

By definition, a Powerglide has 2 forward gears. And you can use both of them............try it.

Yea, it won't let you go into "L" !! But car does shift ok. But no ability to downshift! Never had a power glide so learning!

It's quite a learning curve. I never drove one until last year and behind a 427 no less. But putting it in D let's it start in low and shift into high. But you should be able to keep it in low. And low gear winds out too.

Are you sliding it to the left before you pull back to low? Maybe there's a shifter issue keeping it from sliding to the left to clear the stop for D

I had a 67 Chevelle with a powerglide and my 3 year old Son downshifted the car into park while going 40+ MPH. It had a console T shifter with a top lock button and the insert wouldn't stay on the shaft with the spring in it and then the spring got lost. He accidently bumped the shift lever throwing it into park and the rear end locked up. My guess is your shifter may be the problem. Can you pull the shifter into low after starting up the car?

Thanks! Found the problem and made a few adjustments and now can get it to slide to the left--- all good!

It will be in the Mecum action at Chicago next month! It's on the website. Bloomington gold car, air, white with tan interior! It's a beauty!

Cool. Found it. and no reserve. hmmm. I might get killed by my wife if I tried to head up to Chicago that weekend (my son has his 1 year b-day party the next weekend). If only this would be at the Kissimmee auction in Jan...I would keep my string going there. Love the white, not sure what I think of the saddle having not seen a 63 with it in person. If this was red inside I would be on a plane.

Car is the real deal-- Rare! Air condition, documented and the saddle is leather--- only color you could get in leather! My interior is red, so I hear where your coming from, but the car is classy looking! One of the best coupes I've seen---- next to mine!
