Default 1954 desiccant cover gasket????

Did the 53-55 corvette's have a felt type gasket to help seal it up, dum-dum or just screwed down without anything else there?

The license plate on '53 - '55 models is totally enclosed in a box with a plexi cover.

The desiccant pack was included to keep condensation from obscuring the plate.

And does NCRS judge the inclusion and originality of the desiccant? What about functionality - original packs would seem to be non functional by now.....

on the back of the lid - the box is screwed to the lid with 4 small screws - and the little packs rested inside the box - if you ever see a 53 54 55 with the rear lic plat fogged over....the packs are prob no good.....I wouldnt be suprised if GM had a part number for them....I kept my originals....pretty kool forward thinking....

You'll find the same little packs in electronic equipment when you open the package or box and you could use them as a replacements I DO!

In the 47 years our '54 has been in our family, the desiccant packs have never been changed and I would expect them to be original to the car.

I've never noticed the plexi cover being fogged over.

Desiccant bags can be dried out in an oven and used indefinitely. No worries! Never knew that the early cars used them....learn something every day. Pretty cool.

Sorta - usually the paper covering is what goes bad and cracks/desinegrates. The silicate contents can be baked and reused if the bag holds up.

I would think you would need to keep it out in the rain or live in the south where you can cut the humidity with a knife.

The back of the top is pulled up because we just finished polishing it.

It can fog up at times I was pulled over by local police and he wanted to ticket me for not being able to see the plate Numbers plus telling me to have a plastic cover over the plate was un legal/ it toke some time to inform him it was original to have a plastic cover and he cant ticket me for being original and it wasn't my problem it some times fogs up . This guy even wanted to ticket me for having wire screens over the headlights saying that was un legal . Well on my insisting he call back to his commander about it and luckily he know I was right and told the policemen not to ticket me

Roy you've just reminded me of something I've not thought of in years. Early '70's, Citrus Heights CA ----my mom's daily driver was a '63 Avanti. They came with glass covers over the headlights, just as many early VW's did. Popular "pull you over" item. Back then (maybe they still do) the police had surprise inspections they would set up. Just as we were heading to town a neighbor told us of a roadside inspection that just set up at the entrance/exit of the subdivision. I had to show mom the back way out across the field I rode my motorcycle in.

Me, bike and Avanti in this picture------and the dog:

I was stopped by a cop a few years back in my 1915 Ford for no brake light. I told him it didn't come with a brake light. Only a kerosene tail lamp that needed to be lit with a match at night time. He shook his head and moved on. OEM equipment is legal, at least in my state.

Thanks. The picture was taken the day before the buyer came and picked it up. It looked like a brand new car.

Test drive right after 4C's finished rebuilding the transmission. Hood was popped open.

The buyer's live in the Monterey, Ca, area. They've been driving it just about every weekend since they bought it from me last summer. I was glad to see it go to a good home.
