Hi all,
I have been digging and digging and still can't positively I.D. the engine in my 60. I am down to thinking I need to know the bore and stroke to be sure. But maybe with the info I have somebody will know something I can;t find.
I come up with 1968 327 or 350. It has the un-machined boss by the distributor for the road draft tube. Is there anything to define the cubic inches besides opening it up, or a CC test?
Here is what is on the engine:
Front pad: 18F103267 V0902HF
Left rear casting number: 3914678
right rear casting number; H247
It's a 68 327/275 out of a full size Chevrolet, and originally attached to a Turbo-Hydro trans. The block was cast on August 24, 1967, and assembled into an engine on September 2, 1967.
18F103267 is the VIN number for the car the engine came out of. "1" indicates Chevrolet, "8" is 1968, "F" is the Flint MI assembly plant, and the 103267 is the car's sequential production number.
V0902HF is "V" for the Flint engine plant, "09" for September, "02" is the second day of the month, and "HF" is a 68 327/275 with a 4 bbl card and a Turbo-Hydro trans.
2914678 is a block that was only used in 68. It was used for 302's in Z/28's, 327's in full size Chevrolet's and trucks, and 350's in Camaro SS's.
H247 is a block cast on August (H), 24th (24), 1967 (7).
Besides the 68 327, the HF suffix code was also used for a 327 in 66 and 67 also, as well as a 350 in 69 and 78. The August 67 casting date, and the 678 block, indicate that this engine could only be a 1968 engine, meaning the HF identifies your engine as a 68 full size Chevrolet 327/275.
The hole in the rear of the block for the vent tube, was eliminated at the end of 67.
Thanks, that is good news. I was hoping for 327, it does have double bump heads on it. Some of what I read said this was a large journal block, is that true?

I think you're right, I'm pretty sure the 678 block was a large journal casting.
