Diesel has an additional 20 cents this year.

Yup. And that analysis doesn’t appear to include the cost of the California mandated special blend. I don’t know the exact amount that involves but I seem to remember estimates of 20 to 30 cents per gallon.

I consider that to be an indirect tax.

$3.59 for premium in San Diego (Costco). It seems like it took a big jump (10 cents) just in the last week.

What's it going for in your town?
You have the $1-1.50 California/West Coast price premium. The West Coast is a separate market for gasoline from the Gulf Coast and the rest of the country. They don't send gasoline from Houston thru the Panama canal or by pipeline to CA. Heard of any refineries getting expanded in that part of the country lately? I didn't think so. The East Coast is supplied from Texas by pipeline.

I can't remember a single time in the last twenty years that May did not bring a serious gas hike....just in time for all the summer travel.

Up here the price of gas goes down at night and up in the morning to catch the "off to work" crowd. So check it out. Price drops at around dusk. Supposedly they do this to try to get their quotas up for the day.

That article indicates $0.67 per gallon added for the special.

Summer formulation costs the refineries more to produce, but that usually only amounts to 15 to 20 cents per gallon.
A few factors are in play....OPEC is finally sticking to a production quota and the US is exporting oil in a big way. That shortens supply and drives up prices in the US..
In addition, the Trumpster's Iran sword rattling and possible sanctions are making the market nervous and that adds to the speculation.
The good news is oil probably won't go up much beyond $80 a barrel...Anything beyond that makes shuttered shale operations profitable again and the supply will increase.

and so do day traders speculating on petroleum futures.....

'something' happens in the world somewhere and there is an immediate rise in oil, and therefore gasoline, prices

not entirely, here in 'Pennsyltucky' we have one of , if not the highest infrastructure tax per gallon of any State / Commonwealth in the country and the worst roads to show for it !

what I find interesting in your area is the difference in price between regular and premium. Where in most locales it's a 10-14% differential it's only around 5% for you ?

sad you calif guys don't pay attention to politics.
our mr "no new taxes" gov has signed new taxes on gas.
not only the base rate but also sales tax on top.
so tax it then tax the tax.

then calif war on fossil fuels.
forcing closures of refineries.

then the mtbe additive.
add the alcohol

yes crude is cheap/
but the stuff needs refining.
without enough refineries, supply and demand.

sad sad sad.
calif is greedy, power hungry, and mandating high cost energy.
someone has to ride that super train

Gas prices ARE politically driven, particularly here in CA where the OP is from. Anybody who thinks otherwise simply isn’t paying attention.

I just filled up for $2.59.

No not trying to make it political nor get into the weeds, just that pricing cannot be separated from politics as political decisions taken directly affect every part of pricing except crude at the wellhead, transportation, and base cost to refine and transport. Even those are somewhat affected, especially geopolitical on crude.
