Default ZZ4 scrap value

So my ZZ4 is toast. Damaged head and piston. Jegs says ZZ4 heads no longer available

would this have any scrap value?

there are certainly reusable parts (crank/maybe rods/pistons, even the block could be sleeved; the problem is finding someone close by that wants/needs it (shipping would make it nearly impossible due to cost)

You don't have to replace a head with what came off it. There are other choices.

If you don't want to do that, strap that engine on a pallet and ship it to me via FastenAll. I'll be happy to pay the shipping. Might even throw in a gift card to Texas Road House.

Scrap value is about $0.01/lb (or a soda for lunch).

You may find some salvageable parts to sell, or to help someone else out (one head, a crankshaft, spare rods, etc.).

I hadn't realized that the block was cracked/broken. Must have missed something.

Based on pictures shown in the other thread this engine may be just fine. Certainly worth a second opinion.
It has 15,000 miles, even the bore looked good in the photos but photo's can hide a lot sometimes.

I've got a '96 LT1 that had some trick CNC ported factory heads on it and it dropped a valve. The head was welded up good as new. The above advice about getting a shop to look it over for a 2nd opinion seems valid.

The Fast Burn heads are a service replacement but if you have piston damage you may be money ahead to purchase another GM engine..

Ah! So I'm the high bidder. Please forward the destroyed engine to me asap.

Realisticly I could have that fixed in 2-3 days back good as new. I hope 66RBS takes it to someone that knows what they are doing for evaluation.

I just hope he replies and tells us what's actually damaged. Looks far from a boat anchor to me, as well.

My thoughts exactly. Bought the "ZZ6 little brother" SP350/385 HP. 19333157 very similar but lower dual plane intake manifold for hood clearance.

Sold the old ZZ4

If you don't have experience in engine rebuilding unfortunately that is the best route. I've seen far too many instances of rebuilt engines that were crap. Many came from engine rebuilders not back yard builders. I prefer GM built over any of the 'crate' engine builders. If a builder sends out an externally balanced 383 with no flywheel that's begging for trouble. Good luck

Yes I have no experience in engine rebuilding. The shop doing the work only uses one trusted machine shop to guarantee the work. He builds them only one way, top shelf, no budget rebuilds. His last 327 rebuild was $7K so I didn't have a lot of options. I might have gotten it rebuilt for less, maybe not but a GM warranty and known costs seemed to be the best option.

Please let us know what you think of the ZZ6 once installed. I'm looking for the best crate engine in the 400hp range myself. Very much appreciate your feedback on this engine compared to your ZZ4.

7k for a stock rebuild is great work if you can find it! A top line rebuild should be around 3k. I feel your pain. I have no experience in upholstery so I'm going to have to bite that bullet. I would never ever pay 5k for a couch and yet I'm going to have to pay that much or more per seat.

Wont be able to provide much feedback. Drove the car 11 miles home from install and leaving tomorrow for a few months in AZ.

The ZZ4 is discontinued and replaced by the ZZ6 family which uses Vortex style fast burn heads. The port design requires that the intake manifold sits a little higher than non vortec head thus my concern for hood clearance.

I did not get the ZZ6. I was concerned about hood clearance and if I remember correctly GMPP told me the dual plane manifold on the 19333157 was shorter.than ZZ6. Also to get 405 HP the ZZ6 requires a 770 cfm carb and I planned to reuse the 670 CFM Holley I had on The ZZ4

The SP 350/385 HP seems to be nearly identical to ZZ6. ZZ6 has roller rockers, 385 has stamped steel. Both use the same roller cam. 385HP uses dual plane manifold which GMPP said is 1/2" taller than ZZ4. ZZ6 uses single plane and it looks taller. Both ZZ6 and 385HP use the angled spark plug aluminum fast burn heads. Similar to ZZ4 so I could hopefully reuse my block hugger headers. As you can see I tried to minimize the additional work/parts on the install. I did not go the 383 route as I have a 3.70 rear end and saw no need for more torque.

Check my post on ZZ4 crate motor failure for the 3 small problems on the install.

another forum member advised the 19333157 385HP motor fit in his 66 just barely clearing the small block hood. I ended up with 3/4" clearance with a 2" drop air cleaner

It does idle smoother than the ZZ4 but the ZZ4 had the LT4 hot cam which yielded 12" vacuum. don't know what vacuum I have on the 385HP. Another forum member mentioned that the LT4 cam installed in a ZZ6 gets you the 430HP that GMPP made.

dont mean to hijack this thread but what seats cost 7k or more to be upholsterd. unless they are being built from scratch and sewn from unblemished hide, or some serious custom work.
