Default Sylvania H5001xv and H5006 xv

Anyone running Sylvania H5001Xtravision and H5006 Xtravision halogens without a relay on a c2? Do you see improvement? I am thinking of putting a set in my 66 when I reassemble the buckets. I know there are a lot of options, just looking for feedback on the sylvanias from someone that has installed them. thanks

I ran them in my 61 for years (with relays) and my 63 for 3-4 years (without relays); yes there is a noticeable difference in light quality and the current requirements are about the same as the T3s from the factory...

When I put the Sylvania halogens in the '64, the difference was notable. I later added the relays and the difference was again very notable. IIRC, I measured an increase of 1 F-stop on the light meter adding the relays.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will install them without the relays for now and see how they perform. I replaced the harness and switch so my wiring is in good shape. I can always install the relays as well later if I need to.

Relays secondary advantage are that they take the load off the headlight switch in the dash.

Mad Electric's web site has a technical section on headlight brightness and relays:

where would you install these relays in both a C1 and a C2? I really don’t like cutting in to the original wiring of these cars, is that necessary?

I installed both relays under the windshield washer tank on my 61. Unless you do a headstand you’ll never see them. This had the advantage of being close to the dimmer foot switch which is where I took the signal off for the relays. I didn’t cut any original wiring by using off-the-shelf Radio Shack crimp connectors.

Havent done this upgrade on a C2 yet but a popular mounting spot for the relays seems to be on the radiator core support.

I run a 1-wire alternator so I gutted the voltage regulator and hid them in there.

You don't need to cut into any of the existing wiring, as I didn't. Disconnect the headlight plugs on the left and right sides. Use the right side headlight plug to power the relays and run wires from there to both the left and right sides with new headlight plugs.
