Default Transmission Question

Will the 4-sp I took out of my 66 fit into my dad's 59? (I converted to a 5-sp in my 66 and my dad's transmission is dead)

Yep. Your Muncie is pretty much exactly the same as the old T-10: same size and bolt pattern. You may have to change your clutch disc (depending on input shaft tooth count) and you may have to change your front driveshaft yoke. But it's a bolt in deal...the shifter will even stay in the exact same place.

I just did this so be careful, the shifter (at least hurst comp +) is different between the muncie and the BW.. The reverse arm that hangs down has to go forward 90 degrees for the muncie or it will hit the crossmember. Had to get a used one and have it rebuilt. Otherwise it works if you never have to back up LOL At least on a C2.

Check the OD of the bell housing transmission access hole and the diameter of the matching bearing housing on your trans. They may be a different size. I believe 1963 was the transition year.

DZAuto would know for sure..........and I KNOW this info is in the archives if you search.

The 1963 ONLY, repeat, ONLY bell housing and transmission front bearing retainer are SPECIFIC ONLY to 1963.The hole in a 63 bell housing and the front bearing retainer have a SMALLER diameter than 62-earlier and 64-later models. Thus, ANY 64-later tranny is a 100%, pure, bolt-on fit with a 59 bell housing. NO NEED TO CHANGE ANYTHING, except as already mentioned in the above reference to #4 post.
Now, with that said, B-W T10 trannys had a 16-spline tail shaft and Muncies had a 27 spline tail shaft. Thus, to put a Muncie in a 59, it will also be necessary to swap the drive shaft yoke with a 27-spline yoke-------------------------TOO EASY!
Also, a shifter for a T10 can be used on a Muncie, BUUUUUUUUUUUT, a shift mounting plate and different levers for the shifter shafts will be needed.

Besides the yoke difference, the Muncie transmission mount on the tail will need a spacer, as the mount is forward of where the BW-T-10 mounting brace is fixed.

I just correctly mounted the Muncie in my 59 (thanks to the Forum members), and after doing so, my Hurst Competition Plus would not work because of the reverse arm you mention above. I called Hurst and they rebuilt my shifter and installed the correct 90 degree reverse arm. They also replaced the welded shifter handle with bolt-on so I can go with the CC period correct handle. Customer service (Scotty) was excellent, and quick turnaround.
