Default What's Faster

Of the 1967 models, which was faster the L36 (427 CI 390 HP) or the L79 (327 CI, 350 HP)?

Since fastest usually refers to top end speed, probably the car with the tallest rear gear ratio.....3.08 or even lower, numerically.

It would all depend on gearing.

I own both those cars. 390 and 350. Both with 370 rear. Both fly

I agree. Since all else is the same except engine, my money would be on the big block with more low end torque. But it also depends on the driver. If one of the Brass clan was driving the small block car and power shifting the 4 speed, all bets would be off!

Torque wins drag races, I would go with the L36 if all else is the same.

Stock, factory engines, all other things being equal, if the L36 can hook up, it's at least half a second faster. On the street, on those factory tires, traction is a big "if", so I'd bet on the 327.

If you look at and believe engine specs the L79 has a higher hp powerband (5800 rpm peak hp for the L79 vs. 5200 peak hp for the L36). This aspect should result in a faster speed. Weight should also be a factor with acceleration favoring the L79.

Beyond the paper differences, the L36 valve train has a greater rpm limiting effect than the L79's lighter weight valve train with a lower rocker arm ratio. The L36 would be more prone to float the valves, with the hydraulic lifters pumping up, earlier than the same lifters in the L79.

In reality the winner would be the engine with the best tune, with both topping out around 135 mph if given enough straight road.

I would say tires and shifting have a whole lot to do with who wins. Equal sticky tires and auto trans, i would say the BB car. Assuming both are "as from factory".

L36 is "faster" but the L79 is quicker off the line as it's lighter. Both are fantastic motors. L36 higher top end and faster, but the L79 won't get lost by any means.

All right - listen up everyone. We went through all of this last month. Not that it got totally resolved. This isn't going to be one of those KO Wheel type repeating subjects is it?
