There was a proposal in 2010 to change rubber compounds in brake parts and require additional testing of brake fluid to determine if they are still compatible. Looks like this requirement was dropped last fall. At least, that what I can read from all this gobbledegoop! This is only a small piece of it.

DOT/NHTSARIN: 2127-AK58Publication ID: Fall 2009

Title: ●FMVSS 116, Motor Vehicle Brake Fluids, EPDM Rubber

Abstract: This rulemaking would amend FMVSS No. 116, Motor vehicle brake fluids, so that brake fluids would be tested with ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) rubber, as this type of rubber is increasingly used in brake fluid seals. This rulemaking would also update references to voluntary standards issued by the SAE International and the American Society for Testing and Materials.

Agency: Department of Transportation(DOT)

DOT/NHTSARIN: 2127-AK58Publication ID: Fall 2018

Title: FMVSS 116, Upgrade Rubber for Brake Fluid Testing

Abstract:

NHTSA withdraws its notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM), published on February 3, 2010, proposing amendments to the Federal motor vehicle safety standard (FMVSS) No. 116, Motor vehicle brake fluids. Since publication of the NPRM and after review of the comments, the agency has determined that updates and corrections outside the scope of the notice are necessary in order to publish a final rule. Based on this, the agency has decided to withdraw the proposal to amend FMVSS No. 116.

I had my calipers rebuilt by lone star and have been running dot 5 for several years with no issue.

Somebody tell me why you shouldn't rather than somebody told you not to without telling you why. All those rebuilders know that Dot 5 is a popular choice of fluid to use in their products.
