I checked the FAQ section and may have missed this, so I apologize if it is there.
I have my doors apart and want to grease all the internal mechanical parts--lock parts, door handle rods, hinges, etc. Also will be looking to make sure all mechanical parts that need it are lubed as well in the interior, etc.--seat tracks, levers, etc.
What do you all use for this? I was going to use red grease, but not sure if Corvette people use it or something else.
I think red grease if applied sparingly would be fine. I've sort of resolved to never use white lithium spray lube any more on anything. I had to remove too much of that dried up and crusted crap from window regulators in the past. Possibly a dry-carrier based spray lube of some type for the seat tracks.
It may sound crazy, but I mixed some red grease and gear lube in a small container and applied it with a very small brush to all the moving parts of interest. Dennis
My Locksmith friends say to never use grease on locks and tumblers, only dry graphite.
On the rest of the vehicle, if you can see grease, you will likely come on contact with it and it will collect dirt and dust, so apply sparingly.
On rarely used surfaces and linkages that are not exposed to weather related corrosion, you only need enough lubricant to let the mating parts to polish the contact surface clean for future smooth operation.
Thanks, all, for your help. I am with you on the white stuff...I made that error once...UGH!
Sparingly applied red is the way to go. The mixture sounds interesting; red has some lithium, but evidently not like the white. Grease is just oil and soap, mostly, so I will be careful. Also, thank you Mr. Locksmith; GREAT tip that I will follow.
