Default Vent Window Removal

I've been working all morning on this and I can't get this vent assy out of the drivers side door on my 65 coupe. The end is broken and I need to weld it to fix it. I'm scared I'm going to break something or scratch the paint. What am I doing wrong?

I just removed mine on my 65 coupe ( to install power windows ). You will have to remove the window regulator and the window. Pull it out slowly. When you get to the top you will have to turn it to clear the bottom adjustment bracket.

There is a paper written by DZ called anatomy of a door. Do a search for it on this forum. It will give you step by step instructions on taking everything apart. I have done it a few times and it's a pain in the butt. I can't remember, but I think the window, rails and regulator must come out first. Good luck. Jerry

Jerry is correct. You will have to remove the window rail towards the rear of the door to get the glass out. It is a real PITA. The fun part is re-installing the window.
I have the paper he is referring to. When it is all said and done it is just common sense. I used duct tape to hold the window in the up position when re-installing. I put a piece of jute over the top of the door so I wouldn't harm the paint. There are two snap in "buttons" on the back of the felt ( and a screw on the bottom) on the rear run channel. The top snap in connector is a real pita to re-install. Be careful when you disconnect the felt as it is easy to distort.

Here you go. As stated above, the secret is removing the window so that you can rock the vent-window assembly back and out.

Thank you Dave Z! I don't think I could've gotten this vent window out without beating something up. Your write-up was great and easy to follow, that's the way the manuals should be written!

Got a problem with the vent window crank, it sticks out too far so there is a gap between the crank and door panel. I thought I would find the problem when I removed all this stuff but I don't see it, unless it's the wrong regulator. There's nothing wrong with the regulator so I hate to replace it just for that. I'm thinking of adding a washer on each screw will move the mechanism towards the outside which should decrease the gap, as long as it doesn't interfere with operation. Anybody run into this before?

Is there a foam circular spacer between the door panel and regulator?

Here is an article from the Restorer dealing with vent window regulators.
Looks like the part number you show is not among the group.

Hope this helps a bit.

I see that you have 2 rings on the vent regulator shaft. A 65 coupe should have a 3 ring regulator, which is a bit shorter (1/8") than the one you have.

63-64 coupe - 1 ring - 1 3/8" long shaft

65-67 convertible - 2 rings - 1 3/4" long shaft

63-64 convertible and 65-67 coupe - 3 rings - 1 5/8" shaft

Double check my figures above. I'm pretty sure I'm correct..

Yes, doesn’t have my part number, however, it states the shaft length for a 65 Coupe should be 1 3/4”. That would make the crank stick out even farther, unless they’re measuring it without the bracket!

According to this, my regulator is for a convertible. He states that he gave instructions in a previous article on how to shorten the shaft to fit a coupe. Do you have that article, Dave?

Another question, the rubber around the vent window needs to be replaced so I ordered new rubber. Basically it looks like it just snaps in. Do I need to remove the window? Do I need to use adhesive? Any tips or suggestions on how to do this?

The bottom of the window that goes into the regular must pass thru a hole in the rubber.

Welding on that broken piece came out okay, must have been in a bind to have broken like that. This door stiffener has a hole that looks like something attached to it. Can someone tell me what?

That should be a rubber bumper. The bottom stop for your window.

No rubber in bottom of door. Any idea how thick it is, I can make one?
