A lot of people think you can stick a distirbutor in many different ways and it'll be okay as long as the timing will set.
That works on most applications but not on a Corvette where the coil mounting bracket, tach cable, vacuum advance and intake runner have their own specific real estate.
I wouldn't think less of the mechanic in this case.
One fella' here put a PVC set up on his '61 Corvette. He used a vacuum advance, single point distributor instead of the original non vacuum dual point and I think he stuck that distributor in upside down and backwards to get it to clear everything. Burt it worked!

There's more to it than that. Once the wires are properly indexed, you'll have to remove the dist. and reinstall it properly indexed. Read post #7 VERY CAREFULLY including the gear dimple indexing. If you follow the instructions, it's piece of cake... deviate and you will be heading back into the black hole. The only tricky part might be getting the dist. shaft to seat in the oil pump intermediate drive shaft slot. You might need a "special tool", otherwise known as a paint mixing stick to get it aligned properly so the dist. base seats on the inlet manifold. Then static time it as described, start it up and check and adjust, if necessary.
Not trying to confuse the issue, but I had to reclock my dizzy similar to where yours is. My reason was needing to easily access the points window with a vacuum advance setup, while using dual WCFB carbs. Works for me!

Confusing because you don't have a C2 coil mounting bracket and ignition distributor cover that used the same real estate.
See post above about the upside down/backward distributor clocking on a C1 that has distributor shield in place.
