Default Power steering

So I'm way out of my element here. I have a C6 z06, but my dad has a '65 327 vert. He's having issues apparently getting the PS upgrade to work. Probably going to remove and replace.... I don't even know what he has in there now, but I was wondering what others here have used for retromod type PS upgrade. Street use only. He's got coilovers in and new brakes. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It would be helpful to know what he currently has and why it is unsatisfactory.

I recently added electric assist power steering to my 63 Vette. Used a unit from EPAS. Made a few easy mods to their kit to keep under hood looking totally stock. Power assist unit mounts under dash and is invisible unless you get on your knees to look for it. Also has variable level of power assist using a reostat which if mounted in reach allows easy adjustment for drivers preference or various needs like parking or cruising.

Just a thought.

Only major suggestion is to make your own measurements. The EPAS instructions were an inch off making my steering wheel one inch closer to the dash. It’s also possible to make the under hood look totally stock if that’s important to you. Think it through.

TXWillie,

Are you talking about the "under hood" or under dash? So the cuts you made through the steering housing and the shaft itself (from gearbox outer flange to the cut through the housing and shaft (23-1/4") moved your steering wheel forward toward the dash by an inch.......Did you also cut 5/8" off the removed shaft?

I will be removing the PA nut and Pittman arm.....anything special you did to get at the pittman arm for removal?

And thanks for the response.......If you would like to PM me that would be fine..

Best,
dcamick

Default Epas

I’ve got the measurements that would return steering to original steering wheel placement and will look for them and post.

My 63 Corvette looks entirely stock under the hood. I’ll see if I can detail what I did and post with the measurements later. Several small changes to EPAS instructions.

I disconnected steering ring at rag joint and never touched steering gear box or pitman arm.

More later.
