[C2] Numbers match vin but not suffix

Numbers match vin but not suffix
Recently purchased 65’ 327. Was told numbers match to 350 hp. The last 6 do match vin. The last two letters though are not listed in the black book HD. Has factory air and 4 speed. The D looks like it was a O possibly which would be 250 hp with ac and power glide. I know I need to check 4 speed #’s. Any suggestions? Maybe some one re stamped?

HD code is a 1965 Chevy impala with a powerglide. As far as the Vin number is concerned the numerals are not very level making it very suspect as being a re-stamp. And most impala engines came with no Vin on the pad giving someone a blank pad. The other number on the pad is probably when someone rebuilt the engine you see a lot of engine builders stamping a date or there code into it.

I would look for the block casting date and see how it relates to your car's build date before jumping to any conclusions. But I do believe it was a HO suffix before it was an HD.
It does look like someone was trying to test stamp a Q on the block above the engine stamp. That would be 327/250 with A/C and automatic. The HO they went with would just be a 327/250 with an automatic.
Good luck... GUSTO

The one picture the balancer sure looks to be a low horse 6” and not the SHP 8” the 350hp got. And that’s not a good sign

I hate to say it after that trim tag fiasco thread, but that's one hinky-lookin stamp pad.
I hope that the seller didn't advertise the car as numbers matching. Please no.
Begging your pardon, but I failed to say "welcome to the forum and hope you like it here."

I agree on the balancer application for a 300HP engine for some car. All the stamping sure looks like a test bed for a new GM line worker. Dennis

Where does the red line start on your tach? Not proof but could be a clue.

Air looks factory with teak wheel. Not sure how to read block and head numbers. Numbers or not worth 40k right?
any help with block and head #’s greatly appreciated

Regardless of numbers if the vin tag is good and you got a clear title it’s worth north of 40k all day long and night.
