I am looking to make my NOM 64 driver a bit more drive-able, I should be able to easily swap out the original points style distributor with this with only a little wiring removal and re-routing, correct?:
Why? A properly setup stock distributor that's in decent shape works just fine and the quality is really a lot better than the imported parts. Unless you have problems with the stock unit that can't be fixed, I would not change it.

This. If adjusting the points every 6k miles is too hard then buy a widget of your choice to replace the points. But keep your OEM dist.
Breakerless SE gets my vote as well. Easy install in your stock distributor and very reliable so far. I got mine from M&H. Someone here said that’s who manufactures all of them.
Just go to Letric Limited's web site, and order the SE Breakerless points. As said earlier, they are undetectable, you keep your stock distributor and installs in about 20 min. You don't even have to adjust your timing. Best of all you can return to points in 20 min also, if you find the need to go back to original.
One of the best mods I have done to my 64. Good luck with your project.

Bought and installed 2 of these exact units on my cars. Absolutely love them. Both original distributors were worn and needed rebuilding. Threw them in a box of old parts and never looked back. by the way... they also come in black if you're worried about the purists having a meltdown.
I hate those in-your-face HEI setups - they scream at me, "...this is out-of-place"....a personal thing but I don't get the fascination with them when they are little advantage on a normal street-driven car...
HEI 55 bucks ebay with tach drive works perfect. It was on the dyno everything it's supposed to do up to 6500. Sorry but no brainer
And I know doesn't fit under the tin. I don't have it anyway
Scott, even if the engine is non-original, there's no reason you can't reuse your distributor with one of a number of breakerless ignition systems installed. And dare I say it, even a Pertronix breakerless ignition, some of which add a rev limiter function. Never a bad thing on these old engines if someone beside yourself were ever to miss a shift.
The biggest advantage is that you don't have to deal with problems in the confined space interfering with the Tach cable and good clearance to return the original ignition shielding. Installing them in the original distributor is not difficult and even pulling the distributor and replacing the bushings (or having someone else like LARS refurbish it) at this point may be time well spent.
The HEI is an excellent distributor that performs well and lasts a long time, in a number of ways however, it doesn't play well with the C2 engine compartment and original layout.
Thanks for all of the feedback, on my 69 about 20 years ago i used an optical conversion that fit under the cap. I think it was from MSD. That car has run fine since, has that style been replaced subsequently?

This is a real misnomer. To make the car more drive-able/reliable, the stock set-up in good condition cannot be beat. Much more dependable than an HEI, and just as much performance.
