Default Matching# ??

A couple of interesting findings when searching for something to buy.

I find this '66 block for sale on Hemmings website.
As you can see it has a vin# on it.

So with not much to do this afternoon I google the vin# and find this on the C2 Registry

Good finds. I would want that block back! He has an email address. I think I will send him a message and the link to the engine block.

I don't think he needs it. His AOS car with side pipes has its "original" motor in it now......

So the C2 registry indicates that this car still has its original motor with #'s matching and 53K original miles yet someone via Hemmings is selling his OE block? Wow. . . . That would be a neat trick.

I'm going to have another glass of wine and try to digest this.

This gonna get good!

Unless he wrapped the car around a tree and is only able to salvage the motor that was in it.

Something a little strange there. The total length of the VIN stamp group of characters is just about the same as the length of the engine Tonawanda stamp characters.
Using math, the Tonawanda package should be just under 1 1/4". (1.228") The VIN package should be just a bit over one inch. (1.015")

The image in the AD is much larger than the real dimension so the difference would be even greater.

Maybe it's just the angle of the camera that makes it look that way because it does look real other than the length. There's even rust in the characters of the VIN stamp.

This block might be the fake one. It looks like the 6 1 1 & 2 were stamped individually and then the 888 together which tails away. 6 and 2 are crooked. I’m not an expert, just curious and trying to figure out why a fake block would appear.

Who would go through the trouble to fake this block? The angles of the pictures are not the same and my attempt to resize the stamps to approximate the same size is not perfect admittedly but this stamp's characters looks pretty good to me. I'd like to see the stamp that is on the engine in the '66 in question.

A little suspicious of this claim too.

During the middle of the 1966 model year, UAW workers were having a hard time with BB machining, so it was decided that all L72 cars would have an L79 motor built for the car as a warranty motor..........

Seldom do you see an original motor car, that someone has wasted money trying to counterfeit a block for. However, I have seen multiple original blocks separated from their original nesting place for sale.

Pretty convincing to me. I bet the stamp that's in it now bears no resemblance to your examples.

This thread makes me feel sick. Someone’s not going to be happy. It’s disappointing there is so much shenanigans that go on.

The registry’s information indicates the car was a NCRS Top-Flite in 2014?!?

You don’t throw The baby out with the water, in NCRS a non original block with correct casting dates is only an 88 point deduction out of 4510 points, regardless of what is stamped on the pad.

Fake engine stamp issues for Corvettes have been going on for 45 years.

OR someone is going to be ecstatic that their original block was found and brought to their attention. Now he will know for sure. If it were mine, I would keep the restoration engine in it and preserve the original block. When it comes time to swap in the original, he already has all of the parts.

By any chance you're not the guy selling the block on Hemming's, are you?
