Hi,
I'm having the exact same issue trying to trace the history/ownership of my car....my cars VIN is not coming up on any of the search sites approved by this gov't site: https://vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov/n...vehiclehistory
My VIN: 00867S107641
1960 Corvette
I'd be more than willing to pay the $10, but my VIN is not there.
Hmmmmmm,,,,,,and we have owned it since 1978, so there should be at least OUR titled info in the VIN database, no?
Any ideas?
Thanks!

The biggest reason you will not get any historic ownership info is that the system was not in existence back in 1978. It was created in 1992, and IIRC even then there was a phase-in of participation by the various states. Owners 14 years prior to the database even being set up would not show even if privacy laws did allow it.

A VIN will only show up in NMVTIS is there was a VIN related transaction (sale, etc.) since the creation of the NMVTIS database in January 1, 2010. That is the date that all 50 states )and DC) were required to provide data to the NMVTIS.
Some states voluntarily started using NMVTIS prior to this date.
States are NOT required to input existing / previous data into the database.
You got your car in 1978, and I assume there has not been any VIN related transactions involving the car since then.
Sales of cars prior to that may not necessarily appear in the database.
I’ve been trying to track my cars history lately as well. I also just recieved the original warranty book with protecto plate seems my car 194675S190664 was born 2/13/65 , was sold at Batey Chevrolet in Carnegie PA on 2/26/65 (which happens to be my wedding anniversary).
The Engine, trans, and rear differential numbers and dates match the pop info, however I can’t seem to get anything else. I think I’ll give vinaudit a shot, but I’m told it had been in a garage layer up for a long time. It’s addictive to start down this rabbit hole though and makes the whole thing more enjoyable.
Well, your car is not in the C2 registry. Maybe we are dealing with a storaged or barn car, or a totalled car. Best of luck on finding it, an it looks like you will need a good dosage of it.
What organization maintains that registry so we could check?

The info there is supplied by owners, and probably also gleaned by some contributors from eBay ads etc. It's nothing official that would show everything. For example, for many years I have been looking for record of my first car, a '59. There has never been any trace of it. Most likely back in the 1970's, either the frame rotted out, or somebody wrapped it around a tree. If that's the case, we NEVER will know because there is just no record to see. (technically maybe there is a paper entry in some old book in DMV archives but probably not, and you would not be allowed to look for it even if it was there)

I have no idea who runs it, but your VIN does not show up there. They have captured about 4.5 % of all the C2s made, It's strictly voluntary to provide information.
