Drum brake upgrades
recommended looking into Carbotech linings - http://www.carbotecheng.com - but noticed that they do not show C2 drum shoes on their web site. (They do list shoes for C1s).
As a result I swapped a couple of e-mails with engineering director Larry Narcus, and he gave me permission to post his responses.
"The metallic shoes to which you refer (J65) are no longer available as the
friction market mentality has changed considerably since the wild racing
days of the '60's. These materials were generally very metal aggressive
and required very substantial heat-up before they worked properly- i.e.
read could pull left or right very violently when cold. The coefficient of
friction was not too great, wear rate was excellent but drum aggressive.
Our Kelated Metallic material is notably drum friendlier, has a coefficient
of friction of about 0.50, excellent cold stopping and effective to 750
deg. F. They do not require a specific drum finish. We run this material on
many vintage Jags and Porsches.
Best approach if interested is to call us at (877) 899-5024 toll-free. We
can reline old cores, but generally do not stock the frames for these
vintage Vettes.
If we can help further, please call.

Larry's response to my followup note follows:
Well, we seem to share some common experience. I raced, when much younger,
a '64 Vette and this car is what got me into the friction business. Those
metallic (J65) linnings were very unpredictable. In our attempts
(read: friction industry) to create more linear response materials with
much less temperature dependence, we have created materials that are much
more drum friendly but somewhat lower with respect to fade resistance.
Somewhat higher wear rate also.
You certainly may post our e-mail conversations on the C1 & C2 forums. We
would also be inclined to offer those participants ( forum members?) at 10%
discount from list on any Vintage shoes we offer.
We construct the shoes by bonding and riveting; we also, at no charge,
offer custom arcing of the shoes to match the actual drum dimension (i.e.
11.025" as an example as opposed to 11.000" nominal) if those dimensions
are provided to us.
Hope this answers you immediate questions. Please feel free to contact us
via phone at (877) 899-5024 toll-free.
Thanx for your interest and hope we can be of help.

Well, now I'm wondering if I might be able to scare up a set of cores from the local Pick n' Pull off a fill size ride .. Not so easy at this point in time, sure .. Those friction linings sure sound interesting .. Thanks Duke for posting the info ..
