Your best hope is now that you have put the Vin on the internet, someone will search for it and see your thread. No service is available to trace history. Good chance the engine survived a crash and the car doesn't exist anymore, but good luck.
I would love if it there was a way to scrape some DMV records only by state and year to see if cars are still on the road and in what state. This would protect owner identities. You can hire a PI to do this for you and broker the comms if its still on the road.
Would you mind explaining a little more about what’s involved in doing this?
This is what I have learned in my personal search. Each state has different laws regarding the personal privacy act. Each state has a form you can fill out and for a small fee get the title history of a vin. Some will not allow you to do this if you are not the owner. Some will allow if you certify that your request is for research only and you have no intention of contacting the people. When filling out the form you have to select a choice. One of those is that you are a private investigator. The personal privacy act has a provision for them.
If you find a PI in your local area or maybe in the state you are seeking they will know best if they can request records you cannot. I would get the form for the state you are seeking and check out its options first and then contact a PI only if you cannot request the info yourself.
I requested from 2 states so far where my car has been titled. One responded back with an email that my request is in process. Excited to see what comes.
I talked to a local PI but he suggested I try on my own first. Its a lot easier if you are trying to get modern records.
i know the car is still around as the previous owner of the block told me he tracked the owner of the car down about 10 years ago but he was not interested.

I'll do a couple of quick mods and sell you a yellow C2. Oh s@#$, did I just post in public here? LOL.

Probably because its now a 435 hp numbers matching car.
I had that experience about 10 years ago when I tried to contact the then current owner of a 67 that I used to own and I still have the tank sticker for the car and planned to give it to him . It was a originally built a 400hp 427 and the car was currently advertised as an oriiginal 435 hp. Not too surprisingly the owner was not interested in the original documentation.

Unreal how some people think. I'd have to throw away the original Protect-O-Plate to my '65 GTO if I wanted the engine numbers to be 'correct'. Screw that....it's part of the car's history, so NOM it will stay, and original paperwork will stay. Life is too short to be all wadded up to preserve lies and deception.
sorry this is an old post, but no luck finding the original owner. In memory of the person i bought the block and crank from, i want to build the motor. Any one know where I can find a set of heads for this to be correct? How do i know they are correct numbers? Thanks
