Default Wax / Cleaner recommendation for Lacquer Paint

Car was painted approximately 20 years ago with Lacquer paint and still looks amazing, Silver Pearl. Looking for recommendation on the best cleaner before waxing that will lightly remove surface contaminents and best wax to use on Lacquer Paint. Even better if there a Cleaner Wax that works well with Lacquer Paint. Not sure how well the old shoulders will feel after this but maybe worth the pain to keep her looking good-LOL
thanks for advice-Roger

to remove surface contaminents a clay bar will gently do that, than you can go with Zymol or Meguires , I like 3M fill and glaze by hand no machine, its not a wax or a polish, it will fill light scuff marks and crazing, it wont last as long as a good wax but a good spray detailer will extend the good looks.

Don't over think this if the paint is in good shape. As mentioned, clay bar, maybe buff with a mild compound/detailer product (ie, Menzerna 3500, no dust up) with a sponge pad orbital buffer, finish with a wax detail, cover. I'm assuming it's kept inside.
Nice car.

Clay bar, then soak it with Meguiars #7 Show Glaze. Let it sit for 12 hours, remove and then apply a second coat and let it sit for 12 hours.
Then coats with a nice carnuba. Google Mike Phillips #7 Show Car as he explains this process in detail. I have been following his instructions on my 67 L79 Coupe (original paint) for over a year and very satisfied.

I used this technique on 52 year old lacquer paint and it turned out great. Meguiars #7 appliead and removed by hand two times, then I used Collonite Insulator Wax #845 to finish. Looks awesome.

Thanks for guidance, off to buy Clay Bar kit, & Meguiars #7. I have used Collonite Insulator wax #845 and certainly holds up well

Your car looks great. Since Meg #7 is a polish, does it remove some paint?

I have used meg 7 for over a year, almost 3 quarts. No paint removed. It’s a pure polish with. No abrasives

Actually its a glaze and not technically a polish. Its fills in imperfections and does not provide correction in the sense that polishes do. I so both application and removal by hand, per Mike Phillips' recommendations. I'm a little wary of using a buffer on single stage paint with this product.

If you are happy with the paint in bright sunlight, and under florescent lights... then by all means, don't use anything abrasive on it.

The paint on my '61 is original.
When it came out of storage, it had some "problem areas", and was generally dull and lifeless.

I started with the claybar - you'll be surprised how much 'gunk' it can pull off the paint. Keep it well lubed as you do this to avoid any scuffing.
I invested in a dual-action buffer.. The DA moves the pad in 2 separate directions, which protects you from accidently burning/cutting through.
I used it with McGuire's Ultimate Compound, which is a 'gentle' compound (although it IS abrasive).

The results were great. I didn't cut through the paint, and it really brought back the shine.

Once you have a good finish you like, then protect with wax of your choice. I use Zaino, but if the prep is done right, it really doesn't matter - they all look good! And durability is not really an issue for a car that is garaged, avoids weather, and only gets occasional use.

I would only consider ceramic coating on a classic if the paint was just done, and still perfect.

Fred

I’m a bit surprised. I was expecting a dozen or more recommendations for the new ceramic coatings. I’ve only had my 66 for a month but I’ve been expecting to ask the same question myself. Although I have no idea what kind of paint is on mine.

When I use a clay bar on my original paint 66 it brings a little bit of the color off and turns my clay from white to maroon.

I've only had my 64 for a few days. She currently has Wax as a protector. My 14 is ceramic coated and love it. I will try a small part of the 64 soon to see what it looks like. My 64 is a re-spray. Not a Lacquer finish.

I started using turtle was seal and shine and top it off with bead maker. It really does add a lot of gloss to the paint and acts like a ceramic.

I was skeptical so I did my daily with it and it was great. For more the confirmation came at Carlisle this year. I took my 03 Z06 and within 15 minutes I had more compliments on my car than I ever have.
