is there any reason i can't just remove the case bolts and rotate the case by one bolt hole? it currently looks like the second pic and i'd like to rotate it to look like the firs pic. i found that pic in a post by john z. i had the alternator rebuilt awhile back and i don't know if they re clocked it or if it was that way. problem is i'm installing a new lectriclimited harness and there isn't enough wire length to be able to use the loom clip hole in the back of the case as it is. not a big deal but if re clocking is easy i'd like to do it. thanks https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-fan-belt.html
You can, but if I recall correctly you can't just take the bolts out and spin it - you have to remove it and pull the case halves partially apart and off the stator. The easiest way is to buzz the pulley nut off with an impact gun, remove the pulley & fan and rotate the front part of the case while carefully making sure the rotor stays inside the stator so you don't disturb the brushes in the back of the case.

Exactly the way to do it. Easy to do. There are a few YouTube videos that show the process.
Pull the case halves apart means just enough to allow the front end of the case to rotate around the stator frame. No more than that or you'll pull the rotor rings out of the brushes. Not a big deal but its a bit of a nuisance to put back. I've done a few without removing the fan and pulley.

Reclocking
It is that easy to do, but usually the front end plate DOES NOT come off that easily. However, yours might. If it doesn't, just pry gently between the front plate and the stator housing, and eventually it will come loose. I like that idea of standing the unit up using the pulley as a stand. That just about eliminates the possibility of having the brushes pop out of their holder. GOOD LUCK, and let us know how it went.
I couldn't count the number of these I've reclocked -- mostly back when I was wrenching for a living, but as recently as a month or so ago when I replaced the alternator on my '63. I have never once disturbed the pulley and fan to get it done. Pulling the stator and case back just far enough to clear the mounting pivot gets it done, and even if you do separate things far enough that the brushes pop out clear of the slip rings, it only takes a moment and a paper clip to get them back into their holders and retained while putting the unit back together.

Agreed, but if the OP is asking then he's never done it and pulling the front case is a little more foolproof as you don't need to know how far before the brushes pop out.
thanks for all the encouragement guys. it went pretty much as y'all predicted. allowed for a much better orientation of the wiring and was able to get the little wiring loom thingy to snap into the back of the case.
