Does anyone know of a 1 5/8" header that fits a 64 C2 with the original oil filter canister. I'm looking for ceramic coated heavy (14 or 16) gage.preferably. I've contacted Hooker, Hedman, Doug's and Flowtech tech support and none of them could answer for sure if they fit. Only Hooker recommends changing to a spin on filter. I want to keep the canister. When I bought the car 40 years ago it had headers. I miss the performance and want them back.
Hoping someone can help.
I HIGHLY recommend Stainless Works headers, though they will require some fabrication to get the headers to meet the factory mid pipes. They are however, the nicest, all stainless, bolt on headers available for our cars.
Welcome to the CF! Putting header on is only part of the equation, but I understand where you are coming from. They create a different exhaust note and maybe a bit of performance. It may require an adjustment to your timing and carb jetting for the full effect. Do you currently have under body or side exhaust? Changing to a spin on filter is easy and well documented here on the CF. It might be your solution!
Thanks for the quick response. The car has under body 2 1/2" exhaust. After a lot of head porting on "461 heads, intake replacement, upgraded cam, distributor recurving, installing 3.73 gears it seems that headers may be what it needs to pull it all together. The canister oil filter is probably more a sentiment than a necessity but I want to keep it if I can. As I said in my original post, it was there when I originally got the car back in the 70's so I know somebody made headers to fit.I just don't know who?

I can’t answer your question directly, but these are Doug’s headers in 1 3/4” black ceramic coated. You can see the spin on filter and perhaps judge where your canister filter would sit.
Pay no attention to the paint stirrers and missing drivers side pipe. I took this picture as I was building a dual 3” exhaust in stainless.
It sure looks like there would be adequate clearance with a canister oil filter on the Doug's Headers. You would think their customer service/tech support would be able to commit to an answer.
I would say there is ample room with Doug’s headers, but if you look closely at Flynavy’sPictures it appears he is using the canister type oil filter. And there is plenty of room with the stainless headers.
Do you by chance remember the model number on the Doug Thorley headers?
The stainless set is super clean. My question to the owner is about ground clearance? They appear in the second picture to be below the pan.
That's how my last set ended.
Have you used the Hooker #2456 without changing tio a spin on filter?
From their instruction PDF: "Replace the oil filter. Headers will only fit with a short-type filter. Older models will require the purchase of a screw-on adapter"

No, but they were ~1987 and designed for the '63-'67 Corvette. They were originally chrome. I had them de-chromed and ceramic-coated years later.
Note, how good a job they did using the thickest flanges (full 1/4") and thick-walled tubing of the day, and no ugly exposed welds to get in the way of the Header Power Bracket.

One more thing. The Thorleys are extremely quiet because the tube are of such heavy gauge. When I changed out from the rams horns I told my wife the car would get louder. Boy was I wrong..., it got quieter.

Wow, those look nice. I've had Hedman's on mine for over 40 years and I suspect they're not going to live that much longer so I'll definitely be looking at these as replacements. Do you mind sharing the ballpark cost?

Not cheap....$1200 for the headers. I spent another $100 with them to get 4, 45 degree flared bends to build my transition pipes from... Again, not cheap, but I like to do things once and I'm very happy with the way these turned out. I wish I had taken more pics of the welds on these headers...they are the best I've seen. The flange is extremely thick, and the tubes are welded 360 degrees on the inside of the tubes.

I have purchased headers from Stainless Works also and they were a great company to work with and if you believe you get what you pay for the quality justifies the price.
