Default Electrical Question

The engine on my '59 283 Corvette with generator has been performing well. I added a 'kill' switch. Does the voltage regulater need to be polarized every time the kill switch is used?? Thanks.
Oh yeah, the 'Battery' gauge has never worked since I bought the car 10 years ago.

If you mean a battery disconnect, I have never polarized the voltage regulator.

On a 59 it is an ammeter gauge. And all the current passes through it. Has it been bypassed?

GGVert, I'll look. Do you mean wired up at the rear connectors??
BTW, you've helped me before. Thanks for your expertise.

Simple answer: No.
Voltage regulators do not benefit from polarization, generators do. But only when a generator has been disconnected and left that way for a long period, perhaps years, before it lost its residual magnetism. Its when a generator is rebuilt completely and field coils are changed that flashing or polarizing is necessary. I have several cars with generators that sit disconnected for 5 months at a time and in 21 years never forgot their polarity.

Is there a large black wire on the other lug of the ammeter where the capacitor is connected? It should go straight to the positive on the starter and then to the positive on the battery. One of the red wires on the other lug goes to the ignition switch. The other red wires go to other unswitched systems like headlights. Look to see what wire other than the capacitor lead is connected to the ammeter connection not with the red wires.

Only capacitor on right side attached. Left side four (4) red and one (1) black wire.

That's why your ammeter isn't working. Possibly it's been damaged in the past and it was bypassed by moving the black wire over, but I have no way of knowing that.
