Hey Tom , good to here about the KB166 and the fact you like them. Summit has them ready to go for 385 . Just a couple of more questions for you .

1. What rods did you go with ?
2 Was that top ring gap a problem ?
3. Which head gasket ? My block was not decked and stock power pack heads about .008 taken off .

I am shooting for 10.5 compression .
Thanks for your time.

Jack,

I used the Eagle rods (small journal) and followed the KB instructions for the top ring gap. I don't recall if I had to file fit the top ring or not, its been a few years. But that is a measurement I check and if it needed to be increased to meet the KB min gap, then I did it.

I used the FelPro Perma Torque gaskets that measure 0.039. With my chamber volume measured at 60cc, piston dome volume of +4cc, deck clearance of 0.015" the CR calculated out to be 9.8:1. If you want to get a little more then you'll probably need to go to the steel shim gaskets. But you need to know chamber volume and deck clearance in order to calculate properly. Get all of your numbers then use an online calculator to see what thickness head gasket gets you where you need to be.

Don't take the published chamber volume as gospel. I have a nice set of 58 heads where someone thought some chamber work would help - ened up with chamber volumes of 63+cc. Long story short, I found another set of X58 heads with the correct 59-60cc chambers.
