Remembering...

Long story, but my Dad would take us out to the drag races at SIR when I was a kid. When I was in HS my Dad had his Corvette painted, and the painter wanted to have it in the World of Wheels in the Seattle Coliseum. At that show, there was a Funny Car, and the show sign said the owner lived in Issaquah, not far from where I grew up in Bellevue. I looked his name up in the phone book, and got his address. Went to the library and found a Thomas Guide with the street names and maps, and found out where the guy lived. I hopped on my Dad's motorcycle one day, and rode over to his house, where he had a large garage/race shop. They had the garage doors open, and they were working on the race car. I asked if I could take a look. They showed me the car, and said come by anytime, which I did..... often. One day, he said, 'you know, I am tired of you standing around'..... he threw me a shop rag and said I should get to work.....

I raced with him for a number of years, then raced with another team, and then a third. Racing with that last team had me traveling all over the country, ended up being a crew chief on a Top Alcohol Dragster, and we were quite successful. Some of the best times I ever had.....
It all started with my Dad taking his kid to the races......

Whenever we were at the races, and when time allowed, I made sure to talk to the kids, who's Dad's brought them to the track. I would bring them into our pit area, and show them the car, close up, and would let them climb into the cockpit...... The parents would take pictures, and hopefully, I helped to plant a seed for the love of cars and race cars.
