Default Crossover Pipe Installed

Just had a 2 1/2 inch crossover installed on my side-pipes. Along with some re-tuning, I'm very happy with the mellower sound and slight performance increase.

Nice move - something I’ve been putting off. Surprised you didn’t put a flanged connection in there somewhere to facilitate removal of a pipe if necessary. But it can be done later if you decide to.

Yeah, we thought about it. My mechanic said it's any easy cut/weld so no biggie.

I would put a heat shield of some material between the pipe and oil pan. Without it, it's helping to heat the oil. Dennis

There's about an inch of space between the pan and the pipe.

Good idea - any suggestions as to what to use?

You could try to wrap it in Thermo Tec header wrap. I use it on my side pipes and it works pretty well. Jerry

Is it something like this?

Amazon Amazon

Or would you use a wrap like this?

Just think of it as a heating element to bring your oil up to operating temperature quickly so you can start having some fun. If you have an inch of clearance with a rounded surface and air flow, I will kind of be surprised if it makes much difference. If you idle in traffic a lo, then maybe.

I used the header wrap listed below on the Amazon site you posted. It worked well on my 66 side pipe car and well on my 68 coupe under body exhaust system. Jerry

The previous owner had the cross over wrapped and flanged.

I have the same crossover. Mine was getting over 500 degrees. I bought two socks from Eric at Classic Chambered plus a nice heat shield and got the temps down in the 200-225 range.

Mark,

Nice. Do you have pics or links to share?

I do not have pictures . The heat shield is metal with two s/s clamps . I’ll look around and see if I can find who makes it. When I had the crossover over made header wrap was installed then. The temp was over 500 with the header wrap. The heat shield made a huge difference.

This is like the one I have. This one is on Amazon. Google clamp on heat shield and there are a good number available.

I've used this wrap for the entire length of my side pipes to keep the door sills cooler for the wifey. Works

Love the look of side pipes but not the power loss, nearby noise or fumes. I've had DEI titanium wrap on my headers to keep heat down for the past five years and it really does help.

I wonder, does the wrap work almost as well as the insulated foil in terms of lowering the temperature?

And is there any benefit to wrapping almost all of the side exhausts just below the manifold and all the way to the end of the straight mufflers? You can assume it would reduce the overall temperature around the pipes, especially if in traffic...would it also change the sound of the pipes? Not sure it's worth doing.
