Not meant to diminish the desirability or collector value of the Thunderbird maybe there's a reason the Corvette and it's Ford counterpart went in different directions.
Does anyone have a C1 with a continental kit? Don't leave out the hardtop with the port holes.
The 56 Thunderbirds all had them and looked OK. The 57's were aftermarket and are ugly! I had a 57 and never would put one on. I think that adding it to any car of the 50's or 60's ruins a classic look.

Way back ... they had practical beginnings

I agree 100%. Standard factory issue outside rear spares, be it on the decklid or in the front fenders look just fine on 1920's through 1940's era cars. In the '50's and up, they just look tacky. I though so 50+ years ago, and think the same now. If I had a '50's car with one on it I would remove it immediately. I feel the same way about 18" and bigger wheels on our '60's cars.....they look tacky and out of place. It's a 'trying too hard' vibe for me for both.
