Default steering noise

A few months ago i noticed my steering wheel on my 64 with manual steering had some play in the wheel. So i replaced the upper and lower bearing in the column and that seemed to have corrected the problem until now. Now i'm hearing noise as i am turning the steering wheel. Other than the noise when turning the wheel i cant find any other issues. Any suggestions to correct this noise issue? ps i did research here before posting but i couldnt find an answer to my problem. thanks

Where is the noise coming from as best you can determine? Inside the car (column), from the front suspension itself?

Have you lifted the front end of the car (unload the suspension) to examine the integrity of the suspension bushings and bearings?

Is the noise in any way brake related as best you can determine.

What is the over all condition of the suspension as best you can determine or estimate?

Good luck... GUSTO

Is it a scraping or light squeal noise? Probably help if you could describe. Possibly the hub is lightly rubbing on the column cone as the wheel is turned.

Try adjusting the lower column bearing just a bit. Jerry

Rock, you may find this document by Dave Zuberer (DZVette on the Forum) C2 Steering Column Components helpful if you don't already have a copy of it.

Good luck... GUSTO

I removed the steering column and found two broken tabs off the steering mast jacket column. the tabs were holding in place the retainer thats below the switch. Could this be normal wear or caused by some other issue? I never had any suspension or steering issues prior to this . I believe someone may have worked on this steering column before as the turn signal wire protector is missing.

I have a question about the turn signal housing. On the opposite side of the turn signal arm is a small hole. I read in one of my reference books this is for an adjustment. theres just a hole is something missing on my housing? thanks for your help.

Is your 4-way flasher switch on the column as well as the hole in question?

didnt know the 64's had four way flashers. I just looked at my 64 wiring diagram and did not see a 4 way flasher.

Oooof. I wasn't even thinking of year to year differences just relying on my knowledge of my own steering column. Since '64 didn't have the button, then might your column be from a later year?

I don’t remember any holes in the turn signal housing piece. Apparently it’s not real unusual for those tabs to fatigue and break though. I’m not sure if that piece is reproduced or not.
