My driver side window has become a little sloppy when I first start to roll it down from fully rolled up. It kind of flops the first inch or so, then rolls down mostly fine. At the very bottom, it seems a little wrong too. I've never pulled one out and taken it apart. I'm just imagining that this sloppy operation is probably not the gears in the regulator. it's probably a roller or rollers or a track or tracks, etc - the other stuff. I'm considering pulling the door apart and removing the glass, regulator, tracks, etc and trying to determine if it's a simple fix, before buying new regulators. If I buy new regulators, it might turn out that replacing the regulators actually doesn't fix the problem.
How often is it the roller(s) or track(s) that create the sloppy movement, rather than the regulator itself?
If I'm patient (I am) and have the basic skills needed for working on cars (I do), am I correct in that this job will not be incredibly difficult? i.e. it's worth my trouble to try this approach first before ordering new regulators?
I would first determine what is giving you the problem before you buy any parts . Next are you working on a coupe or a convertible / if a coupe you will need all the patience of jobe and be slow and methodical as it is not a job for the faint of heart . Convertible glass is much easier to deal with / in either case you need to open the door up and take a good look before you order anything . Hope this helps Jeff
check the bottom of the door and make sure the fiberglass is not broken out where the lower window track bolts too. If that’s ok then time to pull the door panel and start to inspect.
If you decide to remove the door panel I would get out the painters tape & start masking off any area’s of the door/paint before you know it your going be all over up to your arms over & under that door & very easy to damage the paint…
Might it be something as simple as the glass having come out of the grip tape in the sash? Can you pull the glass up in the channels at all?
The '63 shop manual has info on pages 1-17 - 1-22.
Attached PDF might be of some help in disassembling things with regard to getting the window out without having to remove the vent window assembly.
Good luck.
