OK: Besides the NCRS cars and perfect restorations ... how many of you guys are using the "original" style spring-ring battery cables and how many have switched to [red & black] ''clamp - on" cables ?? Opinions...
Thanks in advance.. :D
Rich, I have the Spring Ring cables on both my mid years and I don't give a hoot about NCRS judging. One set works great while the other set seems to allow for one of the clamps to loosen (has even popped off a couple of times). All things considered, I suppose I would recommend the bolt type if NCRS judging wasn't being considered (with a **** disconnect switch incorporated). JMHO...
i've got split rings on mine. it works as well as the other kind on my truck, and it's quick to get on and off. i've recently had a short, which required i disconnect after each excursion. it's never lost tension and clamps well time after time.
My negative cable popped off ... that's what started me thinking. We went for a ride this past weekend, having just replaced the battery and made sure the rings were on tight (I thought) . We parked the car - went into a bakery, got back in the car, turned the key, dead -Almost freaked........ Popped the hood, and the negative cable was completely off!!! I was watching the car the whole time, so I knew nobody messed with it. I guess my ring lost its spring!!! Jumped off when I hit a bump, maybe.... !!!
Well sheeeet! Maybe the ring wasn't snugged down as tightly as it could have been? Mine will give me problems if I don't set them down as far as possible on the post. I wonder...
Rich, that is the same type of problem I have had with one of mine (specifically also the - cable on the coupe). In my case, I believe the "spring" in that Spring Ring has "sprung" for good. I could replace it, but that is WAYYYY down on my list of things to do... :leaving:
I still have the original neg. cable. I solved the loosness problem by giving up a small pair of vice grips to the cause. :hurray:
Sure beats worrying about it, and you can just remove it at the start of judging. :D
C'mon ... considering that both your cars are matchning numbers :jester , I am shocked that you do not have spring ring cables in both as well. :steering:

Now, this man and I are definitely kindred spirits... :yesnod: :steering:

Re: spring-ring battery cables... (RichF)
Rich,
One other option you might want to consider are the braided cables made by Taylor. They have solid brass terminals, a four gauge copper conductor and a braided alloy outer covering. They are available in several lengths and places like Summit has them.
....hey, it gets EVEN better with me.....oh no, i have to make things much more complicated...i JUST HAD to move the battery on the bb over to the driver's side so that i could free up space for the VA kit hoses and a planned sb overflow tank (don't ask  )...so i cut the battery box door into the wheel well and then realize i need a freakin' positive battery cable to reach the moon...so i call and price the correct. long positive battery cable - :lolg: .....freakin' idiots
...so, me and my buddy have this long battery cable problem with maybe 3 bb midyears and we decide to take the cost effective route and build our own....i'm not modest at all by saying the cables turned very, very nicely, very large bolt on clamps, carefully soldered, shrink tubing, etc., etc., BUT we HAD to buy 100 ft of 4ga copper  ...i damn near died...me and my friggin' bright ideas.......
the good part is those cables look like they're jumper cables for the space shuttle  ...NO voltage drop there
If it isn't broke don't fix it; I am using bolts. However, when I am fully
committed to a frame-off NCRS resto, I will use the spring rings. Just
driving now, restore later.
