Update 6/18/23 HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL THE CORVETTE DAD’s today.
well I drove an hour away found a nice guy who shaved 1/2 “ off the tire, still does not fit, I can’t believe it. I’ll take a chance and drive without one. Next Saturday the 24th I’m driving my 67 3.5 hours each way to the GM Nationals at Carlisle, looking forward to it. Maybe I’ll see one of you there.

Went last year. Don’t have high expectations there were only about 4 lines of vendors. But I did go on Friday.

Spare tire blues
how things going with your Vettes ?
RE:
GM Nationals it now may rain so I may not go, I will see.
as for my no spare I took the advice of another member and ordered a cheep new tire from Tire Rack a 185x65 R15 tire it is only for a temporary spare and it’s 3.5 inches smaller in diameter than the shaved 775x15 and it should fit, it’s a peace of mind thing not a nos thing.
best regards,
Bill

I guess I don't understand. If you know the tub diameter and the tire size diameter before shaving simple math would tell you how much would need to be shaved for it to fit. If he took off 1/2" that would only decrease the diameter 1".
Wouldn't simply buying a cheap stock size tire work? That's what I did on my 67 Coupe. I have 17" wheels and I just bought a stock size tire 205/75/15 to fit my 15" spare wheel. You never see it unless you have to use it.

Spare
[QUOTE=Vega$Vette;1606751485]
I have 205’s on the car I never had a spare but rarely drive long distances with the car. I tried to fit a 205 aged out tire with a stock 15 “ wheel and I could not get it to fit. I had a 67 prior to this one for 27 years it had a stock 775x15 spare tire I never used that fit fine I guess it was an original tire. I assumed the repro would fit, but I was incorrect. The tub is original to my car that’s why I assumed the repro would fit. Not the end of the world the smaller tire will fit and hopefully I’ll never need it anyway.
I guess I don't understand. If you know the tub diameter and the tire size diameter before shaving simple math would tell you how much would need to be shaved for it to fit. If he took off 1/2" that would only decrease the diameter 1".

Some have used Chevy s-10 donut spare. Piece of cake in the tub and avoid the roll back of shame if unfortunate enough to have a flat!

I did manage to squeeze in a full size radial tire on a 6" knockoff wheel. Check it out here.

There are many used tire places around my area and I am sure you could go there and try some out to find one that would fit. If it is for show then it is another matter.

Tire
I took a members advice bought a cheep 185 65 15 new radial from tire rack it fits but the tub is not flush I guess I need the longer 10 inch plus front tub bolts it fits but a little wide now
I think I’ll go back to no spare

IIRC, they are 8" but I had to replace mine with 9 or 10 inch bolts for the same reason. The tire goes up at a less severe angle with longer front bolts making it easier to get the tire into the tub. They are available from aftermarket Corvette parts suppliers.

I don’t want to hijack this thread, but I’m looking for a space saver spare for my C2.
Other than a used S-10 wheel and tire, what vehicles had/have a space saver with the correct bolt pattern and caliper clearance?
(I have the original 7.75 spare but wouldn’t want to drive around the block on a 59-year-old tire.)
Any help is much appreciated,
D

I went to junkyard. Found a few donut spares and tried them on a five bolt gm car/ truck.
cost 10 bucks. Then came home and tried it on Vette to make sure it fit over the disc brake caliper.
I researched first to see what other brands use same bolt pattern. Honda was one I think, but check.
Also I found suv wheels were too tall. I got mine out of a sedan.
next I want to find a jack and lug wrench that fit in foam inside that spare. More storage behind the seats.

Works like a charm in my carrier.
Is your tire carrier original or a repro?
Maybe that makes a diff?

I'm not saying don't carry a spare. I will say that I owned a car for 31 years averaging almost 12K miles a year and I had leaks, but never a flat. I've had two flats since 1989 and one was- I think- sabotage. I mean, that was the longest wood screw I ever did see, about 8" long and it didn;t tear up the wheel well, I came out in the morning to find it there, and if I ran it over, it would have torn hell out of the car as it went round. Anyway. When did you last have a flat?
My advice is to get the skinniest spare tire possible, Surely some dedicated space saver spare fits our cars, It's a spare. Sure it's cool to drag out the perfectly matched spare wheel. But it won't have the same mileage as the others anyway....

I bought an S-10 16" spare tire and rim at a junk yard for $50 or so. The bolt pattern is the same and it fits the tub without extension bolts. This setup is good for short runs. If you are putting the spare on the front, no problem. if you put it on the rear with posi, either move one of front wheels to the back to keep the rears uniform or drive slowly. Jerry

I know the the S-10 spare fits well in the C2 tub but is driving on a 35 year old undersized tire sensible??
