I finally got my 67 small block mostly put together after painting, and got to drive it today. Good news is it really drives nice without squeaks or rattles. And the noises from front of trans area are gone. ( I did not remove the body, and havent touched the front suspension). The bad news is that I still have a vibration that shakes the whole car at 55, but goes away by 60. After playing around I realized that it will shake under acceleration in any gear at about 3000 rpm. Push in clutch or back off gas and it goes away. It won't do it at any rpm when not in gear.
In the chase I have replaced the clutch and flywheel. Multiple wheel balances inc force balance. Balanced drive shaft, half shafts, all new u joints. New trans mount, front input bearing, and tailshaft bushing.
Now that it is more assembled, I can hear and feel things better. It doesn't seem logical that it is in drivetrain, trans back, because it is clearly rpm related, not speed. I don't know much about harmonic balancers. Could the issue be there?
Just a completely wild guess here but pilot bushing?? If your bell housing has a removable cover maybe you could look and see if the clutch disc looks to be uniform (centered) to the pressure plate all around the flywheel as you rotate it?
Checked pilot bushing, it had less than a hundred miles on it. Nice and tight.
I had a friend drive it today, who is very knowlegable about Vettes. He said he thinks it is an engine miss that is only showing up at certain rpm. Brought it home and let it cool. Was getting ready to do compression test etc, when I found this.
I have only been able to put a few miles on the car, betweenbody work stints, so it was hard to remember what it felt like way back 3 years ago. ost of the repairs I did were justified. Bad U joints, motor mounts, and a crappy clutch. So not sure what fixed what. But I can't wait till new wires come in, and I will use a different routing scheme.
Maybe a couple of bolts loosened up maybe cross memeber or universal bolts or maybe motor mounts ,
What you're describing still sounds like a DRIVELINE Vibration.
just my 2 cents worth
I had a 67 air coupe that was doing the same thing and i changed to all of the universal joints and that cured it
