Default Another tire question

Guys,
Can I go to 205 or 215/65/15 tires on bolt on wheels?
This is a lower profile wider looking, better handling tire.

Anyone out there currently with this combo?

Thanks,
:steering:

I've seen lots of mid years with 215/65's on stock rims and they fit well. It's a fairly popular tire size so there is a good selection of them available. They're a little shorter than the oem tires so you'll have some speedo error unless you change the speedo drive gear but it's no big deal if you don't. The speedo will read a few mph fast but it's hardly rocket science to make a mental adjustment while driving.

The best tire you can put on bolt-ons is the 215/70ZR-15 Pirelli P4000 Super Touring. It pulled about 0.85g on a vintage Maserati Ghibli tested in the January C and D, and it will clear the fenders, except for jounce with a lot of front lock (be careful entering steep driveways) and maybe a bit of frame rub on a full lock U-turn.

This size also matches the OEM 7.75-15 tire to the button with 775 revs per mile, so there will be no change in accuracy to your speedo/odo.

I run 215-70R15 Michelins on my 67 with Bolt-ons. I'll send a picture of the tire on a wheel to you.

Well, I tried to send you a picture your hotmail rejected it. Never mind.

215/65R/15 on this car, the 70 series tire looked too tall. The 65`s fit the wheelwell perfectly. When I need a new set on my 68, they will be this size.

The 215/70R-15 is the same OD and revs per mile as the OEM 7.75-15 and F70-15.

What would be the best size to replace F70x14 that would match the revs per mile?

From and old Pirelli Pocket Tire Guide I pulled a spec for the F70-14 of 796 revs per mile. This would probably correspond to a 215/70R-14, but I'm not sure if this size exists. Finding decent 14 inch radial tires that match older bias ply revs/mile is tougher than 15".

You can search The Tire Rack by size to see if this size or something close exists. For each size click on "specs", to see the engineering data. You can also search the manufacturers web sites.

You want to find something close to 800 revs/mile.

I am currently looking to put new wheels and tires on my 66 conv. I really like the Cragar look and am just trying to decide what wheel and tire combo to use. 15" 16" 215/70 or 215/65? All seems a mystery. I was wondering if you could email me some pictures of your car so I might get a better feel for what i like to look at. Maybe you also would have rather gone a different way or have seen something you think is better. i am open at this point. But if I am going to spend a thou, I would like to make sure A) it fits without mods and B) I like the way it looks.
I look forward to some pictures,
Thanks
