I believe a 3 speed was the standard trans , and the 4 speed and auto were optional .

4-speed was a $184 option ( $188 in 1963, $184 in 1967)…. On a $4200+ car, that’s a pretty pricey option.

In 1963, 919 had the standard 3-speed, about 4%.
in 1967, only about 424 Corvettes had the 3-speed… that’s about 1.8%…

Some people may have wanted or needed to save money.

Some of my dad’s friends figured a 3-speed was quicker for drag racing due to the extra shift…. Although by the mid-60s, that found it wasn’t really the case.

I have spoken with other original owners (not Corvettes though), and several just honestly didn’t check the box for a 4-speed ( some thought it was Standard)…. Similar for Positraction.

I knew a guy that ordered bucket seats in his Chevelle, and it was delivered with a column-shifted automatic (he thought floor-shift and console were standard)…

I had a friend who was a drag racer in the late 50's and early 60's. He ordered a high horse 60 with three speed because he thought it was better for drag racing. Certainly not many high horse cars with three speed. In the same vein I remember seeing at an NCRS meet a fully loaded mid year coupe with about every option available but it had a three speed.

Original owner used mine extensively for racing. Had a 270hp with 3 speed.

back in the early-'70s I knew of a trans-am that was column shifted (automatic), because it didn't have a console. it did have a power sunroof. two things I have never seen on one since.

seems like at one time I heard that by '68 a dealer would not order a three speed unless someone had already bought the car.

My uncle ordered a 67 with the base 327/300 HP with the 3-speed. i asked him way the 3-speed and he said he liked to shift his cars but their was no need for the
4-speed for how he was going to use it. He lived in Fargo N.D., was his only car, needed to run all year long each day to get to work. lots of his driving was
"cross country", no drag race stuff. also said in Fargo it gets to -10 to -30 and this is way he did not order a BB, he needed it to start each day to get to work.
I bought it from him in 1980 and still have it today
The 3-speed was only fitted to the base motor.
I also have a 1990 ZR-1 and a 1971 LS-6 with the M-22 and 4:11, when i do drive the 67 I have to think......over and down, over and down, not over and up!

'69 was the last year for a 3-speed.

252 out of 38,762 total built that year came with it...
