Default Too High!

No, not that one. The car (1967) sits too high after a full body off restoration. I bought the front coils and the rear leaf (Eaton 9 leaf) from Zip and both sit way too high. I still have bumpers, grille, hood, and a few odd and ends to add on but it's not going to come down. The car came with a HD 7 leaf that sat pretty good and I think that's going back in. Then I'm going to raise the coils and trim off one round. But Why?

Drive it some on a bumpy road and see if it settles.

Did you buy the stock 12 coil or the shorter/stiff one they claim is easier to install?

Stock front coil springs from Zip and stock rear leaf spring from Eaton. Car sits perfectly level. The measurements are almost exact to what the AIM manual specs them at.

It’s the shadowing between top of tire and fender lip in the picture. It’s within an 1/8” front and back

Are you sure they are in the top pockets correctly? I had a customer ‘64 in the shop that had the same problem. His was not in the pockets correctly.

I agree . It happens a lot . The back is another story . I've seen a lot of new aftermarket leaf springs with too much arch. You can get different length spring end bolts that might help but still might ride stiffer.

Yes Tom,your '67 is sitting way too high. Install the bumpers and all the stuff that is not on the car and re-check the ride height. If it's still too high, check to see that the springs are cocked into the pockets correctly.

Be careful about cutting those front coils Tom. You shouldn't have to cut coils to achieve the correct ride height. And, if you go that route, cutting too much from the springs could make the car sit too low and you'll have tire rubbing problems. Oh, you could cut one quarter coil in increments and reinstall, but that involves more labor and $$ each time until you get it right. Are you doing the spring installation. yourself?

The new coils may settle a bit after driving for a while, but that would be in the range of 1/4" to 3/8" max. Nothing appreciable compared to how high its sitting now.

I'd call Zip to get them to verify the part number and application of the front springs. Maybe they sold you the wrong ones? And, it has happened that the spring supplier got their labels mixed up and you were sold the wrong springs for that reason. Who made the springs that Zip sold you?

Tom, After checking the spring orientations, don't make any alterations or decisions until you have the car fully assembled and have driven it for a bit. Until the springs and bushings have experienced full movement and have gotten settled into position, any ride height changes are shooting in the dark.

Were front A-Arms tightened with car in the air? (Tightened only after car's weight on the ground and having driven over a few bumps to allow a-arm bushings to settle.)

Front coil springs set per AIM in TOP of coil pocket on frame? e.g. Not aligned with drain hole in bottom a-arm.

You probably know this Tom but cutting a coil spring increases it's spring rate too.

Measuring at center of each wheel from ground to fender lip is 25.625 and within 1/8” front to rear both sides.
