At the first Bloomington Gold Survivor judging event I took a friends black 64 coupe 365hp A/C car for judging. He bought the car from the estate of the original owner several years before.. Car was rough but visibly a dirty original with only hoses and tires replaced. The judges were very excited about the car and had several other judges come over to look at the VIN. Apparently the restamp was only over the suffix that changed the designation from a 365hp car to a 365hp WITH A/C. From their inspection of the car including the date on the A/C compressor they all believed this to be a factory correction and it was awarded a survivor certificate.
I never gave much of a care about originality and consequently never even looked at the VIN stamp. Last count I had of the car was that it was sold to D &A Corvettes a couple of years ago. I've asked the second owner if he had the VIN somewhere and he does not. Perhaps there are records of it in a Bloomington Gold survivor database somewhere.

There is at least one very well known 1969 black corvette that has what is considered a factory restamp OVER other numbers as the original stamping had some of the numbers transposed by mistake, supposedly. They didn’t grind it out, just stamped over it. I may be mistaken but I think it’s been certified by CCAS but it’s been judged many times and the pad has been accepted as original. It’s interesting to say the least. Maybe some of the more experienced judges who have seen these will elaborate more as that’s the only one I’m aware of.
