Default Front shock damage

The other week I noticed when driving my car it would bounce a lot after hitting bumps and take a while to settle out. So last week when changing oil we noticed the front shocks were wet. So I ordered new shocks and installed them today dad said he has never seen front shocks come apart like this. I am wondering what could have caused them to fail like this. They are only 15 years old and 15k miles on them. They where Delcos made in Mexico

Did you unscrew the shafts, or did they just pull out? Dennis

Having trouble wrapping my mind around this. Did two shocks fail in the same way at the same time?

Looking at these, the shaft would have to unscrew from the piston in the cylinder....yes or no? Is it possible the shaft rotated from the motion of the shock going up and down. I personally use a jam nut on the tops of my shafts, mostly to keep the nut from backing off. Dennis

both were wet last week and both came out just like you see them. A few years ago the stamped steel washer failed on them and I bought the heavy steel washer for mid years and installed on them. I am not sure if that is when they started to fail or not. If so that is very poor inspection by me. But I only started to notice the excessive bounce this year

and further investigation the resto house I bought them from years ago sold me 67-81 F body shocks. now I am guessing this was an oversight by us by installing them thinking I bought the correct ones.

It sounds like someone just assumed the F-body shocks were the same as Corvette. The 67-81 F-body front shocks fit numerous GM cars from the mid 60's through the late 90's, but the Corvette is not one of those. The only other GM car 63-82 Corvette front socks fit on are 55-57 full size Chevy's.

The Delco number for all 63-82 Corvette front shocks is 530-315 and the rears are 530-4.

Your Chevelle is a 66 or 67 isn't it? I know the Camaro front shocks were shared with some A-bodies, the 68-72's for sure and maybe the 73-77's, but not 64-67's. I'm not saying it's alright, or that it should happen, but I can see how someone could mix them up, especially when trying to deal with all the different applications that some of the Delco shocks had.

It doesn't appear there is any thread damage on the piston ends of the shafts. Could it be when you replaced the washers, you spun the shafts when removing the nuts and thus unscrewed them from the pistons. I would expect the manufacturer would have used red thread locker to keep the nut on, but maybe not or maybe it was missed on your batch. If the threads are not stripped, that is about the only explanation
