Default Starter Clearance Issue

Looking for help to solve 10MT starter issue on 62 327 manual. The starter did not want to disengage. So, after verifying no issue w/ ignition switch purchased a new 10MT starter rom Corvette Central. During install I had to grind material off of the top flange at threaded hole location to get enough clearance for the 3 mounting bolts to align to bell housing. After getting everything connected, I found the armature of the starter is almost touching the flywheel (nowhere close to 1/8" clearance). I tried to shim but can only get to about .075" clearance. I did not think shimming with these starters was typically required which leads me to believe this mounting flange in the replacement starter is out of spec? I'm trying to figure out my next move and looking for suggestions....thx (is it possible to swap out new starter components and install in old housing?)

Welcome to the forum.
Pictures will help the C1 experts with diagnosis of your problem. Is there a dust shield on the bellhousing?
By armature clearance, are you speaking of the shaft to the teeth on the flywheel? Are you speaking of the bendix drive gear to the flywheel teeth.
The nosing is interchangeable with any 10MT starter from the 50s thru 70s.

Thank you. Yes, I was referring to the shaft clearance to the flywheel teeth - I ended up removing the cone from the original starter and placing it onto the new starter assembly. When i installed it lined up nicely with the proper clearances - functions properly w/ no grinding. thx for the help.
