I have a neighbor looking at a car that says it's numbers matching however one number is upside down is this a red flag?

I'd be more concerned if it DIDN'T have the upside down "1"!

I myself would say no problem. Looks like a factory mistake, easily done in the heat of production.

I wonder how many were stamped before it was noticed that the 1 was upside down and corrected it.

I'm going to assume it didn't get corrected until he got to "2"...

What's amazing to me is that at least 99 cars have an upside down 1 and the guy stamping and changing out the 10s place digit multiple times didn't fix it! Granted, my wife says I have a touch of OCD in the way I work, but this is just eye twitchingly bothersome!

My '67's VIN has an upside down 8 but it's much less noticeable than the 1.

But you have to remember…..in the 60’s, the guys building these cars didn’t think of them as a “one day classic”. They were just building cars…..and they never dreamed that some 50-60 years later, that people would be worried about the direction of a serial number or engine stamp. They were just building disposable cars, day in / day out. Union workers earning their paychecks…..building cars that most them knew they could never afford to own.

I hear you, but no matter what the intended job is, I couldn't let that slide once I noticed it.

I forget. Were you not suppose to buy a car made on a Monday ( hung over workers after football Sunday Funday) or was it Fridays after thirsty Thursday. Maybe Wednesday was the best day they were at peak performance. I typically like Thursdays because I’m one day away from weekend!

The yellow arrow VIN has more than one anomaly...
