Default Steering box rebuilt tech tips req´d

Looking for some information of what fluid (and how much of it) needs to be filled into a steering box after rebuild. All I need to do is change the lower bearing....

...remember to having seen a tech tip with pictures somewhere but am unable to find it agian. Has anyone got some information for me ?

Thx for help !

Current GM number for the fluid (in 14oz tube) is #12377985.

My 63 shop manual has detailed instructions on overhauling the steering gear.

I couldn't find the capacity of the steering gear, and although the shop manual has instructions for filling it (which assume the box is removed from the car but holds true for in-car as well), they don't make sense to me without being able to eyeball the steering gear box:

"Align holes in side cover with those in housing and install the upper cap screw. Place steering gear assembly in a vise in it's approximate position when installed in the car. Fill steering gear by injecting steering gear lubricant into lowest side cover screw opening until lubricant appears in other opening. Installl two remaining cap screws and lockwashers to complete assembly of side cover."

Use a sealer on the screws to reduce leakage later.

Thanks very much....forunately found a source for the shop manual and will have it by sunday.....

...found the link now on corvettemagazin.com in the tech archives....but this link is dead.

To me the description makes sense. As the car is taken apart i am able to hold the damn thing between my very two hands and just do it :smash: !!
