Default Headlight Conundrum

Looking for a steer here. My headlights until recently operated perfectly well. The other day I turned them on and held the switch to rotate open the buckets. The left one opened fully. The right stopped short of fully open. I tried a few more times and got the exact same results. When closed, both buckets line up perfectly with the body. Anyone out there had this happen? Any pointers would be very much appreciated.

This happens to every C2 several times.

Pull the motor, clean the old grease out, replace the gear if the old one is disfigured. Replace grease. Clean the brushes and the armature. reassemble and reinstall.

Do not use white lithium grease. Over time it will harden and freeze up the gears. Use a good quality synthetic wheel bearing grease. Jerry

i just did my two last year and both gears looked like this and the grease was very hard. Good advice not to use white grease, I had success with good wheel bearing grease.
I just rotated my gears 180 degrees, cleaned and reinstalled, All is good now.

Don't know about others but shortly after (2 yrs ago) I got my 66 I had my first time to drive in the dark. One went up, the other stuck down. I don't drive in the dark anymore but I do flip the lights up every now and then. They work fine. I think you need to "use" them to keep them.

agreed. Mechanical things do not respond well to sitting unused.

if the motors have been apart before (great chance they have been) and was improperly reassembled, the halves could be warped to the point they will put a bind on the cross gears and make them slow and make noise. but once apart it's a fairly straight forward job

I'd pull the retainer clip off, slide the motor off the shaft and make sure the bucket rolls over smoothly all the way from top to bottom. You may have a simple mechanical bind or something that it's catching on.
if you're planning on taking the motor off to work on it anyway start with that one and try that rotation friction test first

I'll go with the two most obvious culprits:

Worn pot metal worm gear
And sticky white lithium grease Clean out the gearing and housing
Fine grit clean/sand the armatures Brush contact areas making sure the armature is not hanging up in the case bushings
Check the adjustment nut on the adjuster that sets the gearing in place. Make sure it not too tight

I just had to do mine. As said a clean up and new grease (I used red hi-temp chassis Lucas) and maybe a new main gear should be all you need ($30 E-Bay) Clean up the motor armature (I held a small piece of scotch brite pad on it and turned it to clean. Then cleaned up the grooves with a dental pick) I also then sprayed some electronic contact cleaner on the armature etc. I found that removing the hood made the job MUCH easier. Before removal mark the location of the hinge with masking tape on the edges and have a friend help!
