I have a 66 BB with sidepipes. When I start it up at work it sets off car alarms. Now that is a  factor of 10. :flag

Bill,

I was just being a smart butt. The figures are correct, but of corse the sidepipes are Hooker racing sidepipes withOUT mufflers installed. I also have Hookers installed on my 63. My opinion is that if stock sidepipes came on your car, then leave them there. However If I was going to buy sidepipes, then I would go with Hooker headers and sidepipes instead.

450,

-------Had a brain f*** there as the headers I referred to were not Hookers but Hedmans. They are short, and turn toward the side to mate up with shortened factory sidepipes with collector adapters welded to them.Sorry for the confusion.

Garrett,

-------Have you ever played with pipe lengths on Hooker or OKCustom sidepipes?I have heard over the years that you could change the torque characteristics by adjusting the overall length..................Bill S

Bill,

Yep, you can. However, it costs money. It's called "development", and I could never afford to do it. I always ran stock Chevy parts as much as possible, still do. I believe that both primary and secondary pipe diameter, as well as length affect the shape of the HP/torque curve. I believe that Duke, and others more knowledgeable than I can give you more specific information on this. Specialty Equipment manufacturers sell to the mass market, and thus they seek the mean, or lowest common denominator in production, to give the greatest profit. However, notice that all of the Grand Sport Corvettes, as well as the replicas all use shorter "tuned length" sidepipes. Not much profit in selling to a market of 5 cars. Even "mass market" race headers (say for all chevys on half mile ovals) are more than most of us can afford. Hope this helps.

I ordered the full wrap. With the 2 1/2 ID core, it only seemed prudent...
I started my install today. The right pipe went on with no problem... The left pipe seems to be missing a fairly critical bend and it wouldn't fit.
I will be calling Ohio Stainless Works on Monday to get it squared away :cry
It looks like I will have to wait another few weeks for that "big car sound"... or would that be BIGGER car sound! :reddevil

67 Sting Ray

make sure you tell us how they sound! looks like you're going from factory design small core pipes to the 2.5's.

the reason i was thinking of going with the "no wraps" is because of the several old GM design pipes i cut apart recently, none had any packing......all the glass was burned out. and stainlessworks uses stainless wool (won't burn out). but considering the much bigger inter pipe, 1/2 wrap may be a good idea (about the same as burned out small core GM's or maybe a bit louder)

did you order aluminized? or SS? also, that black/red combo look fantastic, my coupe is red/black leather.

Talking strictly about factory systems (not Hooker or over-the-counter GM race parts), I haven't seen any A-to-B comparisons (on the same car) of the Corvette factory sidepipes vs. the factory under-car system, but I HAVE participated in a straight A-to-B comparison (on the same car, same day, same chassis dyno) of the factory '69 Z/28 conventional dual exhaust system replaced by the factory Z/28 chambered exhaust system (stock factory exhaust manifolds, no modifications). With no other changes but the pipes (as the factory installed them), the car lost an average of 21hp at the wheels with the chambered system (sounded much better, though) :D

The owner wasn't too pleased after spending $750 for the chambered system, hangers, etc., but he liked the sound and enjoyed the change anyway

yes, seems like all the GM chamber systems (Z or Vette) suffered from the same problem, very small/restrictive core pipes........... i'm hopeing these 2.5" core models flow significantly better :seeya

I'll add some info:
Start-'64 coupe 365 / 327, Big Rams Horns and stock 2.5 sidepipes (pipes are 30+ yrs old). No riser, stock spacer, even taper bored it cause there's a lousy transition portion on the spacer. Good sound, motor went south
Next-only change is to a zz3 motor, L98 heads, good sound, no louder. Same headers and pipes
Next- change to a zz430 motor. Did some grinding to the Rams Horns to fit the FastBurn exhaust ports. Quite a bit louder. Added an amp to the stereo.
Next-Had a set of headers made to exactly match up to the sidepipes. These are shorties, 1-5/8" tubing, ceramic coated. Much louder. Ran on a chassis dyno and the operator said that the side exhaust was strangling the motor.
Next- added an additional exhaust system. I kept the sidepipes and added "sweeps" welded into the sidepipes going to 2" pipes running through the original frame holes and brackets. Clean setup ending with 3" X 12" glasspacks out the back. Good news is the sound is fantastic, quieter side exhaust at all speeds and a real scream at high rpm out of the back. Bad news is that I only picked up 8 RWHP on the same dyno.
Maybe should have known about the Allens pipes. I'm not out of money or curiosity yet.

Absolutely! The right pipe went on without a hitch, stock heat shields (cover) and all!
I talked with Matt from Ohio Stainless. He said the side Pipes are computer bent and that my left pipe should have gone on ok. I took a couple of polaroids and scanned them into my computer (maybe it's time for a digital camera!), and e-mailed them off to him. I should have word by tomorrow...

UPDATE!
After doing a little homework on the fit problem I have been having, I made an interesting discovery. I checked the casting number on the left exhaust manifold... It comes back to a 454! Checking a little deeper, I found that the diameter of the 454 manifold is very slightly over 2"!
I am now on a quest for a 427 manifold! any suggestions on where to buy?...
Thanks! :mad

I've been considering rebuilding my factory side exhaust using Stainless Works chambered mufflers. Should cost far less than the $729 it would cost for complete replacement. My current side exhaust (2 1/2" SB) are in good condition, but way too loud! Anyone else try or consider this?
