Ok, there is a lot of posts aroung temp issues and what the guage reads Here is my question: How does on get a accurate temp reading? What type of guage system is used to do this? frank in Colorado
Infrareds are great, but they can give an erroneous reading from "shiny" surfaces. Most or all of the reasonably priced ($75-$250) units have a default emmisivety setting the works best with a flat black surface. We use these extensively at work. Put a patch of black electical tape or a good spot of magic marker where you want to measure. The upper hose just before the thermostat is a nice place to check, it's usually flat black.
I run a wood stove with galvenized pipe connecting to black pipe and have seen 30 - 50 degrees diff. 2" apart from the two surfaces.
Daffy
I was tired of trying to use others so I bought my own. I bought a
Rayteck Raynger Infrared temp gun. As stated it has some user qualaties to consider, but all in all they are great. I paid around $130.00 for my unit (new) on Ebay. It was pricey but I find tons of uses for it. Plus you will make all kinds of freinds who will want to use it :smash: .
If you did not want to buy one, I am sure any radiator shop, or garage will have one they can check for you.
Frank,
Are you having overheating issues? Or do you just not believe your temp gauge. I should have a an IR gun by the end of may (B-day present) if you want to come up and use it, you of couse would have to be christened into the CCC which would require the consumption of alcohol. I don't know if you know of the CCC yet (Colorado corvette crazies) since you are new to the forum, but anything can and will be fixed around us. :yesnod: We are not a corvette club, we do not pay dues, and we do not have members, just a bunch of guys that love the hobby and beer.
If you want to borrow it when I get it just let me know and you can come on up, not that far from Englewood after all.
Can I be invited too? Love beer, own 2 Vettes (so I am already certifiable), and need the "work"! Might be a "trip", but a little snow never stopped me before.
...you can approach this the old-fashioned way by taking the radiator cap off a cold engine, stick a meat thermoter in the radiator and bring it to temperature and compare the reading vs. the gauge......you don't need the accuracy of an IR temp reader
I bought one from 3D Cool (http://www.3dcool.com/?module=product&sku=MiniTempMT4###) last year for the same price but they are indicating it's currently unavailable. The New Yorkers might give them a call to see what's up.
This is a neat "toy" for the car and also for checking the AC / heating system performance around the house (now there's your excuse to go buy one).
