I just installed the carb from Lars today, and it runs excellent. Thanks again.
I also installed the Ignitor from Pertronix. Everything seems to be fine except that now the dwell is at 25 instead of 30. Does this mean I have to change my initial timing?

Re: Pertronix Ignitor (xsray)
The Pertronix will change your dwell (one of the many reasons I don't care for them...). Set your timing to 36 degrees total (with vac advance disconnected). If you need instructions on doing this, drop me an e-mail and I'll send you a tech paper on how to do it right.
I just found out my L79 has one of these on it. What other reasons do you have for not caring for them, and why do you recommend the 36 degrees total advance?
Lars,
Ditto on the timing settings for me also. The Pertronics unit has worked well for me for several years but you have made me aware that my timing might be off.
Thanks in advance,

36º is close to optimum for most engines. Some may like a little more, some a little less but it's a good place to start. How much peak power an engine makes has always been a big issue, as is fuel economy and other factors. Too much or too little total timing can reduce power and economy. Many people just focus on initial advance without considering that it only affects idle characteristics. Once total timing is determined, the corresponding initial can then be used accurately for future adjustments. For example, if you set your total at 36º and check initial and see 12º, you'll know that your distributor is adding 24º centrifugal. If you want to try more total timing, you'll know that raising initial to 14º will increase your total to 38º.
Before changing to an MSD distributor, I ran a Pertronix in a stock distributor for several years and was happy with it. I don't know if it was just advertising hype or not but one of the benefits they touted was it's ability to optimize dwell at different rpms instead of being fixed like in a point system.
We are running pertronix units on a 61 270 HP (69 camero distributor), and a 65 350 HP! Compared to points, there is no comparison!! They are economical and work great!!
