Default 1963 Vette, Transmission Question

I am restoring a 63 and the prior owner cut the frame to install the muncie 4 speed. I am looking for the correct casting numbers for the tranny that is suppose to be in this car. I have the 340HP 327. Please email me at dpharris@hiwaay.net. Thank you in advance for any help.

To the best of my knowledge, I had an early 63 splitwindow.
These early ones had a borge warner 4 speed. BEWARE..the stock bellhousing will only accept a BW from that 6 mounth period. All the others had too large of an input shaft cover. I found this out the hard way when I tried to put the spare BW from my 60 in this bellhousing. Too big, will not fit! So, be careful and find out what Vin # you have and see if it came stock with a BW or Muncie and go from there. This was my experiance anyway, just trying to save you any grief. Good luck.

Not sure why the prior owner cut the frame, both the Muncie and the BW units use the same mounts. The 63 is a unique year, that year they used both the BW unit (early production) and the first generation Muncie tranny (later production). You need to give us the vin # so that we can give you an approximated build date, which will also determine if your car came from the factory with a BW or Muncie.... Good Luck.... :smash:

Here is the VIN# 30867S102217. This is the numbers on the tranny that came from the car. Case # 3925660, Tail # 3857584, Bell Housing #3858404, and side cover # 3884685. Needing to find out what # casting # is correct. Thanks!

That Muncie is from a '68, and the bellhousing is from a passenger car. Your car was originally built with a small-bearing-retainer T-10 (T10D-1 main case, T10-7D tailhousing, T10-148B side cover) and a casting #3788421 small-hole bellhousing; both were one-year-only 1963 parts. Can't imagine why the frame was cut - the Muncie is a bolt-in replacement for the T-10; might have had something else in it between the T-10 and the Muncie.

I have the original bill of sale and some early photos of your car. My Mother owned it in 63-64. Contact me if interested.

Its very possible posting to this 12+ year old thread will not be seen by the poster, whose last activity on the forum was August, 2003.

I'd suggest sending him a PM and maybe attempt a forum email to try to contact him directly.

I'd also suggest posting the VIN and what you have in the ORPHAN VIN stamped parts sticky thread at the top of this page, so he (or a subsequent owner) might find it in a search.
