We did our 65 a bit ago. Bought the headliner from Al Knoch and it's vinyl over a semi-rigid plastic form. Remove the trim from around the doors (tops and posts), the windshield (mirror bracket and visor hardware) and drop the halo panel. The liner is held in place by the trim pieces. No glue was needed.

Not a bad job.

Good luck.

I had the same experience as DZVette on my 65 coupe a couple of weeks ago. I made the mistake of trying to reglue my old headliner, but saw the effort was futile. I also bought a new unit from Al Knoch. You just have to remove all the perimeter trim and the old unit drops out and you can install the new one. I took opportunity to clean up my sun visors and mirror while they were off. The new headliner was much thinner than the old. After an initial fitup, I decided to try to use some type of insulation behind the new headliner. While trying to figure out the best material to use, I decided to try using the old headliner that had a layer of fiberglass type insulation. It worked. The new headliner has a solid fill and there was not problem in installing the new over the old.
