I've got an early 66, (9/65) and am going to replace the inserts to my spinners. two of them have the checkered flag pattern beginning with black square in upper left corner and two are opposite pattern.
Noland Adams books talks about the checkered flag pattern changeover for the gas cap cover but not on the spinners.
Do I match the gas cap pattern or doesn't it matter???
You know what I never thought about it but check you're nose flags also because didn't they change the blk/white about the same time.. I know that doesn't help with you spinner question but it might solidify when the change over occurred... Dave...
Wow, I never noticed that! I have three with the top left being black and one being opposite. The one spinner that looks original is black on the top left.
Both my nose emblem and the gas cap cover have a white square in the upper left. (That was the correct pattern for early 66, at least for the gas cap).
Unless someone comes up with a definitive answer I'm going to order the same pattern for the spinner inserts, (White in upper left).
i've never been able to figure out what's correct (for early/late, etc)..... i've seen both patterns on 66 and 67 gas lids.
What is correct is only determined by whether or not you have the car judged, imo. If you are just driving it, as we all should, then don't worry about it. Notice how many folks here didn't notice the difference? If you really want to know what is correct, buy yourself the appropriate judging guide from the NCRS at http://www.ncrs.org. Click on the store and buy your manual.

i understand what you're saying....... both style gas lids are currently available, and if you need a new one, you might as well get what your car is suppose to have.
i do have the NCRS tech manual, it says white in upper left corner is correct, black in upper left is repo. but yet some will argue here is an early and a late design??
there are other "early/late" differences that the manual ignores

I think that the arguement of early versus late will go one for quite a while. I have heard the arguement that when it came time to make spare parts, GM didn't specify white or black. I do agree that if you are going to spend the money, buy what is correct according to the NCRS. Take a look at the parts in The Last Detail's catalog. Their stuff is perfect. I think that they have two versions (at least for my 72) of a lot of stuff. One version is the standard repro and the other is made from new tooling. I bought the latter at a bit more money but it is dead on and beautiful to boot.
