This thing has hung around without an answer for a long time. What do you think that the reason is? Let me take a stab at it. Fill it till its full.

Don't know the specified capacity. Fill the reservoir to the full line. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times (preferably with the front tires off the ground). This helps bleed the air out of the system. Shut off the engine, then check and fill the reservoir. Drive the car as you would normally, check the reservoir after the next couple of runs to see if the level has gone down any. And, of course, check your handywork under the car to make sure no fittings are leaking, etc.

Appreciate the reply. The reason I asked is I am starting the car for the first time from a complete rebuild. Once I start this up I want to run it for at least 20 minutes to break in the new cam and bearings. The last thing I need is the steering pump not to have enough fluid and have it go dry on me then burn it up. I know if I fill the pump up to the FULL line it will be sucked through once the engine is running. Can't very well add fluid while its running due to the alternator being right over it, since I have A/C on the car also.

Problem is that you fill the reservoir full to the brim and start the car and it will suck it down. You are going to have to add fluid no matter what. If you fill it up, I dont think you are going to hurt the pump. Or why dont you just remove the belt and run the engine in first.
