I have the GM crate LS6 eng. in my 65 Biscanye. I changed to a soild lifter cam before I installed it.It runs real strong. It ran high 13s with street tires. Thats not bad for a 4000 lbs car.Go with the new one.

What was wrong with the 402, did it have oval port heads matched up to the rectangular port intake. You cannot tell the difference in performance between a 402 and a 427 if the cam and heads are the same.

Just be careful, not all crate engines come with a fuel pump boss for a mechanical pump.

The 402 has oval port heads and it runs like a pooch. The engine I settled on today (and ordered) is a GM 454 HO Crate engine, 454CI/425HP Iron head (with rectangular ports) roller cam engine. It produces 500 ft. lbs. of torque and burns premium lead free gas. Includes everything but the carb, starter & distributor and it does have a conventional fuel pump boss. I got this engine for $4,456.00 including shipping to the installation shop.

Thanks again for all your input. I'll do followup posts during and after the engine installation.

Good choice...
Now, you also need to order the clutch bar bracket from Scoggins-Dickey Clutch pivot bracket , a new flywheel Flywheel , a pilot bearing, and a new short snout water pump...

That's the exact choice I went with!

I agree w/ Denny's list of little extras, plus one:
you should use a "mellonized" (sic?) distributor drive gear if your distributor of choice doesn't come with one.

As I understand it, its required to be compatible w/ the (hardened?)
steel gear on the camshaft.

Good luck and good choice!

PS: The engine will come w/ a flexplate for an auto. You will need
a new flywheel for 454/manual, and the 454 HO is externally balanced.
This means that depending on the luck of the draw, the new flywheel
and the engine may not be 'exactly' balanced when combined.

You might need someone who knows what they're doing to fine-tune
the balance....

PPS: I picked this engine for a variety of reasons:
4 bolt mains
similar power, torque to originals
compression that will take any gas
decent quality internals
fuel pump boss
rectangular port heads for matching the 3 x 2 intake
warranty
and last but not least, its all new!

My settiments exactly. I have the flywheel & distributor gear coming with the engine. I'll look in to the clutch bar bracket tomorrow. I am hoping to have this project finished by the middle of February. Of course, since I live in Upstate New York, it won't leave the garage till spring unless we have a dry clear day.

Any guess what a new LS7 crate engine will go for when it hits the market?

Loren,
I am waiting to find out before I decide on an engine for the 65 resto-rod project that I am underway on now, but I would guess that the engine will push over the $15K mark! I will probably use a LS2 in it instead. You can buy one of these for $5800, and still get a buttload of giddyup in a very reliable package.

Regards, John McGraw

Default The time has come to send my Vette to the mechanic

My '67 Coupe gets picked up tomorrow night and will be gone for about 4 weeks to have its new engine installed. I will be very anxious till it returns. I'll post the results as soon as I get it.

Good point. 400 horses is more than enough.

Default It's getting close to coming home

I can' wait... my'67 coupe should be back home next week with the new 454ci/425hp GM engine. With it I had the following installed new 11" clutch & flywheel, new aluminum radiator, breakerless ignition & hi-output coil. I am really anxious to compare performance to the old engine. I'll add to this post as soon as I find out.

Default It's home and in the garage

My 67 Coupe finally came home tonight (with the new engine). It is snowing here so I only drove it a block from where they unloaded it to my garage. First impressions are "GOOD". It starts & sounds strong with a very nice lope at idle. It now has the new 454/425 HO GM Crate engine, new flywheel, bell housing & clutch assembly, updated pertronix ignition (with a supercoil) and a new aluminum radiator. I used my original tri-power manifold & carbs from the original 435hp engine. Now I have to wait for the snow to clear and the street to dry up before I can take it for a spin around the block.

I'll post more info after I drive it a few miles. Some time this summer I plan to have it run on a chassis dyno. I am curious to know what is actually happening at the rear wheels.

Roy

Roy , That looks great and I'll bet it drives nice too!

Question, when they painted the new motor did they strip the old paint or did they paint over it?

Have fun!!!!!!

They sprayed the engine with a non-petrolium cleaner, let it dry and then painted over the original paint.
