Did you take the lens off of the speedo cluster?

Great instructional page, BTW.

Yes the lens was removed - however since the frame around the cluster is actually part of teh lens assembly what I really did was cut the lens part out with a dremel (leaving the frame surround) and paint it black.

This is about as close up a shot as I ever took of that cluster.

Each gauge mounts through a piece of 1/4" plexiglass (a gap was left in the middle so that the original warning lamps would remain visible) this was glued and screwed over a gauge bezel I got from another forum member.

These bezels have included the buckets the old guages are protected by, they have to be partially removed to allow the Autometers to fit - so the backside looks really abused - once the plastic pieces were cut out and fit the whole thing was painted and prewired on the bench before being installed in the car.

Default used oil pressure gauge

Hi, anyone replaced a working oil pressure gauge that would fit on my '79 coupe? I could use an original part. Thanks, Joe.

Yup, I have one. Drop me a note.

Fauxrs, Did you use the cut-off wheel to remove the lens or what? I've tried everything from a scroll saw to a burring tool, the plastic just melts back in behind the cut and it's hard to make clean.

Here's mine, but it's just a temporary layout. Autometer is coming out with the Cobalts in 5" for tach and speedo, so I'm changing it to that when they do. I want to do the panel more like the above using the original faceplate, maybe put the extra small gauges in a pod on the pillar or fab something behind the shifter.

Really? I talked with an Autometer representative a few weeks back and they had no plans on a 5" speedo and tach. What is the estimated release date?

Jeff,
I tried to drop you a message, didn't realize that you had a space between 70 and ls1, sorry.
Anyway, I E-mailed them last night, they replied this morning and said that it will be sometimes this fall and to contact them late this summer for a release date.

I have a clever little plexiglass cutter which is a simple hand held tool - it cuts it manually (no heat) - once it was cut i smoothed the cut with the dremel rotary sanding tool and small cutting wheels where needed - then polished the whole shmear with a small buffing wheel before painting.

A cutoff wheel would work but it would probably clog up abit because of heat. sneak up on it - dont try to cut it once, I cut back like an 1/8" or less from where i wanted it to be and then shaped my way to the finish location.
